Bengaluru: Jet Airways employees stage protest, urge central govt to save airline

Bengaluru, Apr 22 (Agencies): Employees of the beleaguered Jet Airways airline in Bengaluru held a protest near Town Hall here, urging the central government to step in and save the airline.

Jet Airways had on April 17 announced temporary suspension of operations after it failed to receive emergency funds from lenders, leaving about 23,000 employees to face a bleak future.

Hundreds of Jet Airways employees including all ground handling staff, cabin crew members, administration and sales team took part in the protest dressed in their uniforms. They held up placards that read 'Hear our cry! Let 9W Fly', 'We have dependents to feed, Pls don't let our 9W Bleed' including the 'Save Jet Airways' and were yelling 'Save Jet Airways ' and 'Save our families.'

'We pay loads of tax, Don't get us under the Axe' and 'We have dependents to feed, please don't let our 9W bleed' read the messages in some of the placards.

Jet Airways engineer Milind Paradkar urged the government to infuse some funds to keep airline running.

"We want the government to infuse some funds instead of our aeroplanes being taken over by other airlines and being flown over by them," Paradkar told PTI.

He said there were rumours that somebody has shown willingness to take over Jet Airways, but the employees have no information who that is.

"The government has to be transparent. Presently employees are not being informed. They are in the dark," Paradkar said.

Other demonstrators said they had not received salaries for the past three months and had somehow been managing their family needs.

Some among them said they had previously worked with the now defunct Kingfisher AirlinesNSE -11.11 %.

On April 20, the employees had written to President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking their intervention to recover outstanding dues as well as to expedite the process of emergency funds for the airline.

Meanwhile, an application was filed in the Delhi High Court seeking direction to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for ensuring prompt resolution of refund dues to air passengers.

The applicant also stressed for speedy settlement of full refund of the amount to passengers who had booked on Jet Airways, and direction to accommodate them on alternative flights to ensure fair business practices.

Jet Airways on April 17 cancelled all flights, including its international flights temporarily after failing to secure emergency funds from its lenders, according to a statement by the airlines.

The embattled airline said it took this decision after State Bank of India

(SBI) on behalf of a consortium of Indian lenders informed that they were unable to consider its request for critical interim funding.

My question is why Jet Airways was operating, in spite of losses. They were playing games at the cost of its employees. Not paying salaries foe more than three months is not a joke. These employees worked very hard to make a living for themselves and their families. That is how life goes on.

    @John

Having flown by so many airlines to so many destinations, I can fully agree with you that all airlines staff have the same attitude at one point or the other.

Airline staff think, travelling public are scapegoats who are always at their mercy.

Although Jet Airways and Kingfisher had a credible service record in the past, things became worst of late.

Surely money was siphoned from the high turnover, fully loaded planes at all times by someone very selfish and opportunistic, the truth will come out from Auditing and forensic investigations.

Where did the money gone? Jet Airways was not a low cost carrier, their charges were always high, but where does this money gone? Those who book tickets at last moment or emergency, these Airlines charge highest rates. Where does all these money gone? Why do you need foreign pilots? You won't find pilots in a 125 crore population?
When other mobile operators can survive the onslaught of Jio, why can't this airline that to without such a competition.

Jet airways was surviving until now by charging high & they did not have any competition. Now they have tough competition from no frills. Even now, most of the private full fare airlines around the world are running in loss & are supported by other Industries like tourism. Now the situation is such that there cannot be many full fare airlines in one country depending on whether it can be supported by other Industries or governments. So India can move forward by having only one private full fare airline with 2 hubs.

SOmetimes i feel its a lesson to Jet airways Ground staff & cabin crews .
    \Why.
When Jet airways became one of the best airline .These staff had changed their attitude .They were not respecting the passengers .I have experienced this in Mlore & Mumbai staff.

But meanwhile i feel pity also.
This time i traveled by AIr India .The service was very nice .I had aunder estimate of AIr India because few years back i had experienced a very bad situation ,but this time i traveled in AIr India after nearly 15 yrs i found it was the best with good Aircraft & cabin crew .

Domestic connection for international fliers using no frills is a new concept, but what is the point in using unsustainable full fare model in domestic route when there are already no frills in that route. In my knowledge, any flight with less than 70-90 % occupancy is loss making & that coupled with other overheads of full fare airlines make it unsustainable in the long run.

My advice is close both Jet Airways & Air India & start a new private airline with 2 hubs one based in New Delhi & other in Bengaluru & recruit the present employees of both airlines on merit basis. All east & west bound planes should originate from Bengaluru & North Pole bound planes should originate from New Delhi. I'm talking about only companies with majority stake with Indian shareholders. Domestic connections can be made with special arrangements with no frills.
