Kaup, Apr 19: The accidental fire that had been started at Kalsanka Bailu in Yermal near Padubidri two days back spread on Thursday and destroyed scrap items worth lacs of rupees kept in a shop owned by Abdul Khader on national highway.

The fire that had started in Kalsanka Bailu on Tuesday night had been extinguished by the people with the help of the fire brigade. On Wednesday morning, fire which perhaps had remained hidden, spread to the forest area near Gundadi area and consumed many trees and plants. The locals had joined together in dousing it again.

Since Thursday morning, the remains of the earlier fire began to smoulder and soon turned into huge fire. The fire then reached the national highway area and consumed huge stock of plastic and other scarp items stored around the scrap shop of Abdul Khader. Fire and thick smoke in the area created bottlenecks in movement of vehicles on the national highway. Kaup tahsildar, Rashmi, who was on election duty, arrived on the spot, and got the fire extinguished through the fire tenders of the fire brigade and Udupi Power Corporation Ltd.
