BJP to contest 27 seats in Karnataka, announces support to Sumalatha

Bengaluru, Mar 24 (IANS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday decided to support multi-lingual actress Sumalatha Ambareesh, who is contesting the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency in south Karnataka as an Independent candidate, instead of fielding its own nominee.

"Of the 48 names cleared for contesting in the upcoming general elections, the party's Central Election Committee has decided to support Sumalatha in Mandya and field S. Muniswamy from the Kolar (SC) constituency in the southern state," an official of the party's state unit told IANS.

This means the BJP would contest 27 of the 28 parliamentary seats in the state, including the five reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) and two for Scheduled Tribe (ST).

Sumalatha, 55, filed her nomination from Mandya on March 20 as an Independent after the Congress conceded the seat to its ruling ally Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S), which is fielding Nikhil Gowda, the only son of state Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, and grandson of JD-S supremo and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda.

Sumalatha is the widow of Kannada rebel star and former Congress leader, lawmaker and Minister, M.H. Ambareesh, who was a three-time Lok Sabha MP from Mandya before becoming a legislator from the Srirangapatna assembly segment near Mysuru.

Ambareesh passed away in Bengaluru on November 24, 2018 at the age of 66.

"Sumalatha recently met our senior leader and former External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and sought our party's support after the Congress declined to nominate her from Mandya.

"The constituency was represented by JD-S minister C. Puttaraju, whose resignation in May 2018 necessitated the November 6 bye-election, in which JD-S candidate L. Shivaramae Gowda won against the BJP's Siddaramaiah," said the official quoted above.

Sumalatha will win, there is no doubt.
The interesting thing will be to see which party she will support after winning.
Looks like a very clever game plan by BJP.
But I wonder whether she also had some secret understanding with Congress.

There is a chance that there can be a understanding with Congress. She anyways approached Congress for Ticket. Because of Ambarish, am sure she is more willing to join congress in future. However, after winning if she joins Congress, then it will be another Nail to coalition Govt's coffin as the message would go that this was Siddaramiahs plan to defeat Nikil Ellidiyappa. Fortunetly or unfortunetly, all the three would be Gaint Killers in Hassan, Mandya & Tumkur are one time Siddhus ChaddiBuddies.

But anyways , looking at BJP's point of view, its better they support Sumalata, because if not 100%, they will get 50% success that one wicket of JDS is down, that to from their royal family. Its better than spending money and coming at third place in Mandya. In furture it will help BJP to improve its base in Mandya.

Fantastic. bJP should have made another smart move, remove candidate from Tumkur and support independent candidate. With that whole Devegowda family can rest in peace . Without spending a Dime for contesting we can remove 2 wickets of this Ghatiyabandhan.

Which BJP candidate will win with the biggest margin? Bangalore South or Shimoga. If Modi fights from Bangalore South then it has to be Bangalore South. 28 out of 28 is possible..

Lol. bjp have fallen into a trap. Now sumalatha's victory looks like a easier task and she may support congress after elections. JDS has lost the track in all the 3 constituencies and may not win any seats!

He was given the ticket but he refused. and aligned with jds. FYI Sumalatha was asking specifically for cong ticket and never asked for bjp ticket coz even she knows it is difficult to win in bjp ticket in mandya.

What support you are talking about? Bjp always finds difficult to secure their deposits in mandya and in last by election it was not bjp vote. It was anti jds vote which also include raitha sangha which has solid base in melukote.
