Udupi: Auto rickshaw drivers file complaint with ACB against suspended RTO Varnekar

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Mar 23: The Auto rickshaw Drivers' and Owners' Association of Manipal filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) against RTO R M Varnekar, who was arrested by the ACB on charges of seeking bribe for repayment of life time vehicle tax. This complaint was filed by the association with the ACB on March 22.

Stickers are being put on auto rickshaws from January 14, 2019 to differentiate them as Udupi City limit (Zone 1) and Outside City limit (Zone 2). Rs 70 per sticker is collected by the RTO through an attender in the office and receipt for the same is not being given, alleged the association in its complaint.

Suspended RTO Varnekar

In 2012, the then deputy commissioner of the district had sent a notification to convert the permit of all auto rickshaw that were registered till January 31, 2012 as city limit permit. Accordingly nearly 10,000 auto rickshaws fall under Zone 1. If Rs 70 is taken per one rickshaw, the total amount would be Rs seven lac. Fitness Certificate is not being issued to auto rickshaws which do not carry the said sticker. The association has urged that inquiry in this regard should also be done in the complaint that is filed with the ACB.

I think this fellow is younger brother of choksi, patel etc. Probably by mistake he is born in Karnataka.

The property of these people should be confiscated and they should be made to cough up the last penny.

But after 2014 this is not possible because Chowkidar hi chor hai

The income tax authority should look into such cases. The cash should be seized and as per law 200% penalty should be collected. This should be given due publicity so that another person is not tempted to collect money under the table.

it is very interesting that after suspending this kind of corrupt govt officers, they are again reinstated in same job or transferred to some other dept. how it possible even though the unaccounted wealth/property/cash found during the raid? it shows that some more people are involved in this corrupt business & they have also share on this. finally they only save this corrupt people. our political leaders including our CM agreed that the corruption is also there in vidhana soudha building. then why cant they take action? is there any other reason?

This is an old tradition in Udupi RTO since the 80s (or before I was born).Earlier days the brokers used to collect and pay the RTO Officer for all transactions.
People did not raise their voices those days, as going through brokers was easier, quicker, than directly approaching the RTO office.
Whenever you have direct approach you encounter these issues of corruption.
Hope!Varnekar has not created his own RTO website for fake D/L's,Road Permits etc. and swindled a huge chunk of monies???
