Bengaluru, Mar 19: The state energy department has assured that electricity is being supplied as per the requirement in the state of Karnataka and there is no need for the public, including the students, to panic.

The officials said that, at present there is a requirement of 12,500 megawatt of electricity and the same volume is being supplied. However, in certain areas, including Bengaluru, electricity supply is getting affected and the people are scared that load shedding may be done soon. But the department says that the disturbance in the supply was for technical reasons as well as repair work. Apart from that there the department has not cut electricity for the reason of short supply.

As 30 million units are produced through hydroelectricity source of the state and 48 million units through thermal power plants, 68 million units from power plants of central government and an average of 5,000 megawatt electricity is produced through renewable energy source, it is possible to meet the current demand. In the reservoirs of Linganamakki and Mani, compared to the same day of last year, there is ten percent excess water storage. In Supa there is five percent excess storage of water compared to the same day of last year.

As the mercury is rising, the use of pump sets for agriculture is also increasing. 35 percent of the total supply of electricity is utilized by agricultural pump sets. Due to the use of pump sets, the time of supply of three-phase electricity is changed. Three-phase electricity is supplied for four hours during the day time and three hours during the night. This information was shared by the sources of the energy department.

S Selvakumar, managing director of KPTCL and secretary for the CM, said that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure continuous electricity supply during summer.
