Food served at Indira Canteens contains harmful bacteria, reveals lab tests

Bengaluru, Mar 18: Food served at Indira Canteens is not safe for consumption, reveals laboratory tests.

Samples of food items such as rice, sambar and bisibelebath served at Indira Canteens at Mudalapalya, Byatarayanapura, Jayanagar, JP Nagar and Nagapura wards were tested by Ramaiah Advanced Testing Laboratory and Public Health Institute.

Both tests confirmed presence of harmful bacteria and concluded it’s not within satisfactory limits.

BJP corporator Umesh Shetty told media that cleanliness is not maintained at the Indira Canteens. “The food given to pourakarmikas is not safe and the bacteria can cause various health issues. More than 16,000 Pourakarmikas are served the Indira canteen food. The state government should immediately take action against contractors responsible for the bad quality food,” he lashed out.

Deputy chief minister D Parameshwara has taken the allegations seriously and directed the BBMP commissioner to check food quality in all Indira canteens in 198 wards.

“If the food quality is found adulterated, action will be taken against contractors,” he assured.

    Very sad
There are some half baked knowledge givers who say bacteria is good
2, Types of Bacterial tests are done for food
    One is coliform bacteria
    Another is MPN count
Small amounts are not said to be positive
To say test positive one colony atleast should be present
One colony means 10000000 Bacteria grown over 12 hours in case of coliform
    That's enough to cause Diarrhea

even food at 5 star restaurants are unhealthy and microbially contaminated. the drinking water that the govt distributes is itself contaminated - how can the food of Indira canteens not be contaminated? Mr. DCM, provide safe drinking water first (that can be drunk off the tap) - then take action against so called 'adulteration'.

Subsidised food is just a political gimmick, nobody would bother about the quality, if you want quality and hygiene, cook your own food and consume ....
State government should stop such schemes and freebies, rather give them jobs ....
Hardworking people are migrating and lazy people either enjoying such free foods or into politics activities ....

More than 99% of bacteria present anywhere is not harmful to humans.

Any organic material that is not near boiling hot temperature or freezing cold will attract bacteria.

In the Western world it has been found that sushi and salads served even in top-class/expensive restaurants are full of bacteria.

So is the case with the food at our homes. It is full of bacteria when getting cooled. But perfectly safe for consumption.

In fact our guts have colonies of bacteria - that are actually beneficial for our health.

In 2018 Karnataka state assembly election BJP wanted to change the name of Indira Canteen to its own suited words.
Now desperate BJP wanted to make the poor go sleep hunger by closing the canteen raising quality and hygiene issue.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike elections were held on 22 August 2015 with the BJP winning the majority with 101 Corporators (Congress won 76, Janatha Dal S 14 and Independents 7). The results were declared on 25 August 2015.

If Indira Canteen food is unhygienic then BJP should be accountable for having the highest number of seats won for not keeping the city clean.

Why the poor who can afford the days meal suffer for BJP's dirty politics?

Water running through Mangaluru taps has harmful bacteria too but you never bothered to test it nor cared about people's health. Food prepared with such water will obviously contain the bacteria ?

BJP, please supply the city with clean water as a priority. Indira Canteen, just because of the name it is known by, should not be your priority.

Also, Pathanjali products did not pass fitness to consume test. Occupy yourself in testing their products in all Pathanjali outlets in the city too, than wasting your time behind Indira Canteens.

Is it as serious as 200 children dying because of lack of oxygen???. Did anyone admit to the hospital because of bad quality of food if not then what triggered the labs to conduct tests or is it election campaign??!!??!!??!!....
Possible that this particular sample was intentionally tainted with harmful bacteria. Good Chowkidaari BJP?!?!?!?!?..

I am absolutely in agreement with you. I have personally tasted food of Indira canteen next to MUDA office in one afternoon and l had congratulated the contractor and his assistant for such good food. Then I wrote a letter to the concerned department about the food and service.

As you have admitted no one has admitted to the hospital. This is a conspiracy.
