Mangaluru, Mar 16: Mangaluru: Quick action by the Indian Coast Guard saved the lives of 36 people, including 16 scientists in a major fire that broke out on a vessel on the night of Friday, March 15 at New Mangalore Port here.
The Coast Guard sent two ships into the sea to extinguish the fire, after it received an alert. The ships Sujay and Vikram sent out by the Coast Guard to deal with the situation worked relentlessly, immediately upon reaching the designated area in the sea and were successful in putting out the fire and rescuing the crew to safety.
Sagar Sampada, a research vessel of the Shipping Corporation of India, is the ship which caught fire and gave out a distress call. It had 36 crew members including 16 scientists on board when the mishap occurred. The photos of the fire-fighting operation are displayed on the twitter account of the coast guard. The reason for the sudden fire on board of the research vessel is yet to be ascertained.
The research vessel was brought to the New Mangalore Port Trust Harbour after rescuing the crew as per the tweet made by the Coast Guard. The vessel in question was conducting research on Marine Biology and Fishery.
