Mumbai bridge crash: 6 dead; BMC-Railways face heat

Mumbai, Mar 15 (IANS): Six people have been reported dead and 32 injured in the past 12 hours since a portion of an overhead pedestrian bridge outside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus came crashing down here.

Police registered cases against Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Indian Railway officials charging them with culpable homicide.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced Rs 5 lakh ex gratia each to the kin of deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. He has also ordered a high level probe into the Thursday's incident.

Railways, senior police officials, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and BMC teams were overseeing operations on Friday.

This was the third footbridge collapse in the city in the last 18 months -- occurred around 7.35 p.m. as the bridge was reportedly overloaded with commuters hurrying to their homes, the BMC Disaster Control said.

The victims identified so far include three women -- Apoorva Prabhu, 35, Ranjana Tambe, 40, and Bhakti Shinde, 40. The two men dead are Zahid Siraj Khan, 32 and Tapendra Singh, 35.

Connecting the CSMT's suburban platform No. 1 with the B.T. Lane near The Times of India Building and the Anjuman-e-Islam School, it was used by thousands of daily commuters rushing to catch the local trains on Central Railway and the Harbour Line.

Though debris have been cleared, traffic restriction on D.N. Road continues, a traffic official said.

What nonsense is this every year.
Yesterday I happened to hear the spokesperson of the BJP some Sanju ...giving some of the most heartless comments I have ever heard on TV. Such people should be boycotted without a second thought. I appeal earnestly to all not to engage her in any of the discussions henceforth.
There was a Congress leaning Poonawalla who said this was the same attitude of the Congress that brought it down to 44! The ruling party beware. Such nonsense by anybody would not be tolerated.
You eat our money, pay compensation to the dead from our money only.In fact going public ..announcing compensation for criminal negligence should also be banned. For the politicians are not doing a favour by killing the general public in large numbers due to criminal negligence of theirs.
To all TV channels please do not host careless, callous persons and the emotionally dead in any of your shows. That Sanju somebody should be the last...
    Natural Calamity she said...
    The public responsible she said...
How can the BJP afford such a spokesperson...? sitting on dead bodies of 6 or more..and giving absurd statements?

Mumbai has many British built bridges, there is no problem. This bridge was built in 1984, why there is problem ? Look at the govt and municipal officials unaccounted wealth. The poor contractor had to use substandard material and less cement just to earn a little profit.

Bridge collapse and peoples death is extremely sad. Nothing learnt from past mistakes.
People now started realizing that REAL ISSUES are always suppressed and minds are diverted towards FAKE issues by leaders.
Where real issues such as Safety standards, jobs, Roads, health, sports etc are highlighted today?
Are these non issues? How people are traveling in local trains? Any concern?
Leaders are doing NOTHING, amazing wealth for themselves and SIMPLY crossing one community against another.
Foolish people ignoring real issues, getting carried away, becoming their fawns. Who are to be blamed?
