Kundapur, Mar 12: The Kundapur police, who arrested the accused of the murder of Hemmady resident Gulabi, have brought out the truth from him. Accused Raviraj, a resident of Mudoor, has confessed that he killed Gulabi by squeezing her throat with a cloth as she refused to part with Rs 50,000 which he demanded from her.
Raviraj who confessed during questioning that he killed Gulabi has also admitted that he took away gold chain, earrings and ring worn by Gulabi before fleeing.
Details of incident
Accused Raviraj is the husband of a woman employed in cashew factory and was staying in the house provided for employees of the factory. Raviraj has four-year old son. Being a driver by profession, he used to be employed in private buses on hire. He later worked as a driver in a pickup vehicle of a local man. Raviraj had borrowed money from some people. He had to repay Rs 50,000 to one of them on March 2.
As non-repayment was a question of prestige, Raviraj had come to the house of Gulabi on March 1 and demanded Rs 50,000 from her. The refusal to pay the amount ended in the murder of Gulabi. He refused to leave without taking the money and sat outside the house. When Gulabi came out of the house to answer nature’s call, she found Ravi outside the house and she shouted at him asking him to go back. But he did not budge. Gulabi asked him to speak to Shivaraman and said that she will pay the amount if he agrees. Raviraj came behind her and squeezed her neck with a shawl when she went to the toilet and was returning again and killed her.
Attempts to assault wife of accused
Accused Raviraj was brought on Monday afternoon by the police to the house near Haregodu where Gulabi was staying. The family members of Gulabi had gathered together with many others who had come to see the accused. After Raviraj was taken back, the family members of Gulabi tried to assault Savithri, the wife of the accused causing a tense atmosphere. Police intervened and made sure peace prevailed.
Raviraj who forgot humanity for money
The wife of Raviraj was working in the nearby cashew factory. Her family was provided quarters in the factory. Raviraj used to stay there. Gulabi was very fond of child of Raviraj and the mother. Gulabi had taken care of the child and brought him up. She used to feed the child and play with him. She had bought a pair of chappals for the child a day before her murder. But cruel Raviraj forgot humanity in front of money.
Innocent wife
Savithri, the wife of accused Raviraj had developed cordial relationship with Gulabi. Savithri did not have a clue that Raviraj will kill Gulabi. She did not know the financial problems of Raviraj. She was stunned to know that her husband was the killer. But she had no pity for Raviraj.
Raviraj was arrested in Siddapur on directions by Udupi SP Nisha James and ASP Kumarachandra. The car used by Raviraj, gold chain, ring and ear rings, robbed by him from Gulabi, have been confiscated. He was produced in court on Monday and he was remanded to police custody for a week.
