India to stop its share of water from Eastern rivers to Pakistan

New Delhi, Feb 21(IANS): Continuing its tough stance in the wake of Pulwama terror attack, India on Thursday decided to stop its share of water from the three eastern rivers the Beas, Ravi and Sutlej to Pakistan.

"Under the leadership of (Prime Minister Narendra Modi), our government has decided to stop our share of water which used to flow to Pakistan. We will divert water from eastern rivers and supply it to our people in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab," Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari said in a tweet.

In another tweet, he said the construction of a dam had started at Shahpur-Kandi on Ravi river. Moreover, the Ujh project will store India's share of water for use in Jammu and Kashmir and the balance water will flow from the second Ravi-Beas Link to provide water to other basin states.

He said all the above projects were declared as the National projects.

India's decision comes on top of other actions like withdrawing Most Favoured Nation status to Pakistan and slapping a 200 percent duty on all imports from Pakistan in the wake of the Pulwama suicide bombing that killed 40 CRPF troopers and which was claimed by the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

India has also sent enough message to Pakistan that it will not be business as usual and that the February 14 terror attack would be avenged.

Meanwhile, speaking at a public meeting in Baghpat, Gadkari said that after partition India got three rivers but their water were flowing to Pakistan.

"... Water will be diverted to Yamuna. It means, there will be more water in Yamuna," he said.

Under the Indus Waters Treaty, a water-distribution treaty between India and Pakistan, control over the water flowing in three "eastern" rivers of India - the Beas, the Ravi and the Sutlej with the mean flow of 33 million acre-feet (MAF) - was given to India.

While control over the water flowing in three "western" rivers of India - the Indus, the Chenab and the Jhelum with the mean flow of 80 MAF - was given to Pakistan.

No one nation owns the rivers. No one nation can dictate the course of a river. No one nation can stop the flow of these waters. These rivers provide food for 2 billion people. they cannot be contained by any evil design. It will be the most calamitous thing for someone to try that. Nine nations benefit from Himalayan plateaus no one can bother the balance. Neither China nor India. There was a rumor of China using nukes to break mountains so as to get some rivers to meander directly, again nonsense.
They all don't come from India, the big ones originate from 'The Tibetan Plateau/ Himalayan Plateau' under Chinese rule now and others like Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi Beas Sutlej from Kashmir and Himalayas. This is the most sinister idea thing going around in the social media that 'flows can be terminated. ' The can be managed but if a treaty exists no nation can control the flow unilaterally.
Where does the water come from: These are glaciers fed rivers, these glaciers are twenty times the size of those found in the European Alps and the melt of the glaciers results in the flow of Ganges, Indus, Yamana, Mekong, Yangtze, Huang He (Yellow), Brahmaputra (a major branch of the Ganges), Irrawaddy and Salween rivers, also Himalayan range, are the source of minor ones Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej.
Glaciers are key to our survival. The Himalayan glaciers form the largest body of ice outside the polar caps and are the source of water for many rivers that flow across the Indo-Gangetic plains. Himalayan glaciers store about 12,000 km of freshwater.
The total discharge is far in excess of 1000 maf , it is foolish to expect to be stored somewhere. It will inundate the entire valley as well as the whole north. You need two hundred huge dams of 5 maf capacity annually to store the release.
Rivers flow through territories sometimes they are Chinese others Indian and next Nepal, Burma or Pakistan. Rivers are not political tools or toys to reprimand nations. This is useless baloney.

Before becoming PM of India, he was speaking about big actions....!!!!??? Now he is taking petty actions. Kashmir issue requires a political solution, instead of that our PM is taking useless decisions which affect common people of Pakistan and not the politicians. Indo-Pak bai bai is only for politicians and not for poor common people. Please do not try to fool the entire nation.

It's just a decision it won't happen overnight.. it will take 5 to 6 years to build canals and dams to divert excess water, so until then water from these rivers will keep flowing... Where is the immediate action that nation is expecting to avenge the attack?

In 1971 it look 8 months to prepare for war with Pakistan ( March, 1971 to December 1971)...

This time it may take at least 90 days to tweak everything in place...Perhaps you can expect a hit on Masood Azhar in April-May...Simultaneously hitting Dawood in Karachi perhaps is a good idea...Pookis deny Dawood in Pakistan...so we cannot kill him in Pakistan right???...

Water diversion will take 5-10 years ...

    ...Tak...Takk...

The way Arnab has been shouting at the top of his voice, one should assume that water to Pakistan is already cut off FULLY. Some people probably are under the impression that it's like closing a wash-basin faucet off !
