Udupi, Feb 11: A woman from Matibettu in Chatkal Pade near Muniyal, Hebri, fed poison to her two children before committing suicide herself.

The victim has been identified as Deepa (25), wife of Santosh from Matibettu near Hebri Muniyalu. The two children who were poisoned by her were Priya (6) and Shreya (9).

Manjunath, a native of Shivamogga, has been operating a poultry farm at Matibettu since the last some years. His son, Santosh, used to stay with him along with his family.

Deepa, it is said, had been suffering from uterus-related complications which caused acute pain in her abdomen region often. She is said to have got frustrated with life on account of this nagging problem. It is said that she believed that she would not live for long and felt that her children might find it hard to live on their own. On the night of February 9, she mixed poisonous substance with food and fed the same to her children. Thereafter, she tried to end her own life by consuming poison. She fell seriously ill after which her family members got her and the children admitted into a hospital. However, in spite of best efforts, the doctors could not save their lives. She breathed her last at around 10 am on Sunday. The police said that Priya and Shreya, who were under treatment at the hospital till about 11.15 am, passed away at the hospital.

Both these children were the students of Amrita Bharati Vidyalaya. Shreya was a third standard student while Priya was a LKG student. Their mortal remains, after performing postmortem, were released to the family which took them to Shivamogga, it is learnt. A case about the incident stands registered in Hebri police station.

Very sad. This tragody could have avoided easily by the mother only if she could consult someone or ask help to go to a doctor for a simple check up.Atleast some neighbours too would help her instead of killing herself and innocent children.may the souls of children be with angels and her soul may find rest in peace.Heartfelt sympathy to the family.

Here medical treatment is very costly. At many cities in Maharashtra and Gujarat there are civil hospitals which provided totally free treatment while here even at Wenlok hospital charges have to be paid and at private hospitals the charges are exorbitant compared to charges at private hospitals in other states.

Exactly... Many people don't get treatment just because they don't have money..... Ayushman bharath is a good scheme for BPL holders, but every induan should get it, irrespective of religion or economic criteria.
