Mangaluru: 'No Horn Day' for vehicles in city on Wednesdays

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 24: With the specific motive of reducing noise pollution, the concept of 'No Horn Day' has been introduced in the city.

This campaign was launched three weeks ago under the leadership of Mangaluru (South) MLA, D Vedavyasa Kamath. It is also being given lot of publicity through social websites. The City Bus Owners Association has welcomed this campaign, and promised to join hands for its success.

The concerned have already taken up the matter of turning Wednesdays into 'No Horn Day' with auto rickshaw and bus owners. Discussions will be held with the leaders of different bus and rickshaw owners’ organizations, the MLA says. Kamath opines that the efforts would be considered fruitful even if it inspires a section of the vehicle drivers to reduce noise pollution, as expecting of hundred percent success would not be feasible.

MLA Vedavyasa Kamath

He recalled that Karnataka Pollution Control Board had brought into effect No Horn Day at Bengaluru on Mondays during the year 2011. He said that because of the vehicle riders not attaching enough importance to it, the campaign did not succeed. Similar campaigns have also been launched in Pune and Thiruvananthapuram, he noted.

Capt Brijesh Chowta, who took to twitter to congratulate the MLA for his nice initiative, hopes that the citizens will support the concept, respond to the call and make it successful.

This is a very sensible move and is most welcome. In Australia when giving a driving test, there is a question as to when you should sound horn - only in an emergency. Else they will fine you. But here in Mangalore the bus and lorry drivers use excessive and loud horns from dawn to dusk without any consideration towards the old and the sick esp. the hospitals. Bus Nos. 15, 11, 4 and 5 are the worst of them. And to make things worse, the bus conductors blow the whistle as though their life depends on it. Unless stringent rules are enforced with heavy fines, these people will never change in a century.

If all road users and pedestrians are aware and follow traffic rules, propper planned parking space is proveded and good planned roads and signals are created, definitely there will be less honking and less accidents.
No horh day is kind of nonsense without propper implication of traffic rules and all road users not following them.

All pedestrians should be now careful on Wednesday. If anyone comes in front of any vehicle, instead of blowing horn may be drivers will put you under the wheels.
So pedestrians should take extra care while crossing / walking on the streets on Wednesday!!!

In India all are Kings & Queens once they are on road when they start to ride 2 wheeler, drice 4 wheeler or more wheels. Even Pedestrians are also Kings & Queens when walking on the road.
Sometime can't blame Pedestrians or Water because there are no Foot paths or no drains for both.
Thanks to those who invented multipurpose road that is concrete road where Pedestrians, Vehicles, mud, Dust, water can use the same road, but even if rain water doesn't pass through the drainage, drainage work is keeps on going besides the roads every year therby increasing dust pollution. Contractors are "LUCKY".

we have nice orchestra music on roads by vehicles. if our driving is disciplined, horns will never be used. foreign countries we hardly hear any horns. during my 1 month stay in dubai or honkkong not even a single horn was heard. in terms of cleanliness and driving discipline we are centuries behind compared to western countries.along with smart city we should focus on cleanliness and disciplined driving. people drive on wrong side or one way and use horns and signal lights.

Please make a Law to Ban honking horns completely in the city limits, most of the drivers are uncultured and they keep on honking horns even if there are small infants in the buses or in any other vehicles. Ladies have been given seats near to the driver, just imagine the situation of that lady & the infant if the driver keeps on pressing horns.
There are plenty of fights happen on the roads only because of Horns, most of the people just want to irritate others. If there is breakdown of vehicle on the road, even if they know the vehicle has problem they keep on honking horns simply to make noise and irritate others.
You can observe in most of the traffic signals when the seconds count start to decrease 10 to 05, most of the hopeless people start to press horns as if they are the only ones who know to see the signal light, they don't even wait for green light to appear.
In Developed countries nobody honks horn, if anybody does for sure there will be a fight in the middle of the road.
In Delhi most of the road rage incidents happen only because of Horns.
KSRTC & other government buses are installed with good Horns, makes less noise, make this as a mandatory for private vehicles too...

The move is good. But there are so many things which are more important. Nobody speaks and authorities are silent:

    1. Congestion at circles/signals. Why ONE WAY system at least on some roads cannot be introduced?

    2. Regulate the twowheel riders. For them a 6 inch gap between vehicles is enough to over take irrespective of correct or wrong sides.

    3. For the last 25 years in Mangalore City what improvements are done except making Traffic Policeice miserable.

    4. Why the flyover at Pumpwell is still not completed even after making promisez several times.

Is everything politics or i difference?

All vehicle users must cultivate patience and follow that fellow vehicle user is also important as I am and follow the rules. Rashness must be deleted from the mind of every driver. All have to reach the destination. For which all must move forward respecting the other driver.
Pollution alone is not the problem of road users. Increased number of accidents also is the problem of concern. Reckless driving, over speed, over load so on and so forth are the every day happenings of the roads. Who is responsible??? "I AM" the driver. Always control, condition the vehicle and the wheel for a safe & sound journey. Thank you and God bless each and every one of us.

What the hell " NO HORN DAY ", if no horn in city then who will take responsible if any accident occurs, if you want to stop pollution there are other ways..

    1. BAN CRACKERS NEAR HOSPITAL , OLD AGE HOME, SCHOOL and COLLEGE.
    2. BAN LOUD HORN in BUSES.
    3. BAN USING OF MOBILE WHILE DRIVING.
    4. BAN "HUGE SOUND LOUD SPEAKERS" in BIG PUBLIC RALLIES or DJ Parties

Having a 'No Horn Day' once a week defeats the purpose of reducing noise pollution. Instead educate drivers that the only legal use of a horn is for a purpose related to safety. What many drivers don't realise is that there are laws regarding when to use a horn. Drivers are supposed to use their horn only to warn other road users (or animals) of their approach in the event. Also a horn should not be sounded when the vehicle is stationary on a road at any time, other than at times of danger due to another vehicle on or near the road!
Enforce the Motor Vehicles Act and fine drivers who horn if they contravene the law!

One of the worst stretch of road where buses use maximum horn is between Fr Muller Hospital and Morgansgate. Since buses of many different routes run on this stretch, competition between the buses is common, which results in too much honking.

Why only once a week? Why not everyday ? Just once a week does not make any sense since rest of the week you have to bear with the nonsense. The ultimate goal of this campaign should be to make everyday a "no horn day" otherwise this will simply remain as a publicity stunt without any benefit to the citizens.

Ban crackers and loud horns are in place for long time. Unless we citizen follow such rules, any such initiative will fail.

This will only work if there are good roads with proper systematic traffic signals , proper designed turns, U turns and most of all a really good driving sense adhering to rules. When there is not even a percent of the aforesaid how can NO horn system work.

They need to see abroad traffic and rules
