Udupi: Two more carcasses recovered - 23 continue to be treated for KFD

Udupi, Jan 21: So far, about 100 people from Sagar taluk in Shivamogga district, who were showing symptoms of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), also known as monkey fever, were admitted into Kasturba Medical College Hospital at Manipal for treatment.

Out of them, 40 had been diagnosed with KFD while 59 tested negative. One report is pending. 76 persons have so far been discharged after treatment. As such, 23 persons who have been detected to be suffering from KFD continue to be treated in the hospital, a release from the hospital stated.

On Saturday, the carcass of a monkey was found from Hebri and while another body was found in Betageri, Amasebail village in Kundapur taluk on Sunday. Postmortem of the carcass found at Hebri was conducted on Sunday and samples were sent to Shivamogga for testing. So far, bodies of a number of monkeys were found in six places within Udupi district, out of which viruses were found in eight monkeys/ However, no suspected KFD patient from the district has been admitted into any of the hospitals here so far.

The remains of a monkey were found from near the house of Betageri Raviraj Hegde in Amasebail village, Kundapur taluk, on Sunday. The funeral was conducted with the help of locals and forest department.
