M'luru: Vijaya Bank merger - Stage for political battle between BJP and Congress in DK

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Jan 20: The merger of Vijaya Bank with Bank of Baroda and Dena bank has set stage for political battle between BJP and Congress in the district, in the backdrop of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Vijaya Bank is an institution that brought pride to the Bunt community as it was started in 1931 by one of the prominent Bunt community leader Attavara Balakrishna Shetty. However, Central government’s move to merge Vijaya Bank with Bank of Baroda and Dena Bank which is under loss has caused commotion in the coastal district. With both parties indulging in blame game, the issue is being used as a trump card to woo Bunt voters.

District Congress Committee has been frequently protesting against Central government and MP Nalin Kumar Kateel for allowing bank merger. Congress in its protests is alleging Nalin Kumar Kateel as incapable MP for failing to save one of the prestigious institutions that was started in the district.

On the other hand MP Nalin Kumar Kateel has come out with a statement that bank merger was a brain child of UPA government and also blamed minister and president of finance committee Veerappa Moily for enabling smooth passage for the same.

Moily lashed back at Kateel for spreading false rumours without understanding the truth and said his act was not appropriate for that of an MP.

Demanding an apology, Veerappa Moily in a letter to Kateel said, “You have the name ‘Kateel’ attached to your name. Remember that this is the name of a holy land. By spreading false charges, you yourself are maligning your own name. In spite of being an MP, without reading reports like an illiterate you have put allegations against me.”

During its initial days, Vijaya Bank was under loss for the first two years, and then it was consistently under profit till date. At present Vijaya Bank is under profit of Rs 200 crore but is going to merge with a bank which is under loss of Rs 2,000 crore and this has become the reason for agitation for the coastal people.

With Congress using the merger as a strong weapon, only time will tell if the party will succeed in wooing the Bunt community and hence gain an upper hand in the elections.

I was an employee of Vijaya Bank once upon a time. Now retired.

For everyones information VB was nationalized way back in 1979-80 during Indira Gandhis time. All applauded the move and no one objected. There was a steep increase in pay and additional perks were introduced and hence was welcomed.

So VB ceased to be a Mangalore bank and became a public sector bank. Over the period of years, it started employing individuals from all over India. Kannada was slowly replaced by Hindi and English as employees were transferred in and out. When I retired from my branch, there were only 2 Mangaloreans.

Its laughable that some group is sloganeering and also fasting as a protest today after almost 40 years of its nationalization. I believe as long as no one losses their job , merger is fine. The merger talk was happening since the 90s. It happens all over the globe, nothing new.

This is now the Nationalized Bank and no ones private property any more. I am being a bunt don’t feel anything wrong in the merger as it’s a government decision.

These Vote Bank politicians are talking about the Vijaya Bank is a profit making Bank. Yes it must be. But, are DK people or Bunt community are getting any share of its Profits ? No.
Only the shareholders are getting a dividend who are still getting it even after the merger.

If the people of DK are very much concerned about this bank or Bunt community then they should have stopped it from Nationalization.

Mr. D'S, are you a Disgust (DS) to the Bunts community in particular and DK (Karnataka ) in general? Why Feku not merging the Bank of Baroda and Dena Bank with Vijaya Bank???? Why the profit making bank would be marged with loss making bank? Why not in other way? Only because, Chor-Chowkidar is very well know that CHADDI Bhakt's of the DK are not only SLAVES of Gujjus but completely BLINDS also!!!!! Nowhere in the world will happen like, profit making establishment is going to merge with loss making. As long as INSANE people are in majority, nothing would be possible to improve the quality of life in India.

you Amith, I have enough respect for my community and I don’t need your sympathy for my community. You are still sleeping and unaware that this was nationalized by Indira not Feku.

Secondly mergers are always taking place based on the size/volume/strength and not on the profit theory as its temporary. Vijaya bank is now making profits. It was loss making earlier for ages.

According to your principle, had this bank merged with BOB some 5 years back you were okay then?

    may please authorize

Bunts should be shameful for NOT protesting against the merger
It was the Bunts who benefited from their own Bank
They are keeping quiet because Modi is their leader
One day these Bunts will regret
Their own Bank is no more, only Vijaya BANK is in profit
They are having lots of Assets all is gone
    Get up my dear Bunts

Except for Karnataka Bank all the South Canara based Banks are PSU Banks since long time
Though started by Great Mulky Sundarram Shetty Many of the top executives are Non Bunts now as appointments are done as a Govt Bank like all other banks
Bank of Baroda is a very big Bank and merger with that Bank will further increase the networth ,Markets of the Bank
Dena Bank alone is the Loss making baggage
Since both Vijaya and BOB are good they will make a good Bank
I dont know why Congress wants to dig on this and try to capture vote on this
Bunts are Intelligent and educated they will not fall prey to Congress s wrong propaganda
