Row erupts as Congress MLA ‘gifts’ Mercedes-Benz to Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, Jan 20(PTI): Amid political turbulence in Karnataka, Congress MLA Byrathi Suresh has courted a fresh controversy after media reports of former chief minister Siddaramaiah receiving a luxury car from him surfaced.

Denying the reports, Congress leader and minister D K Shivakumar said Siddaramaiah has not been gifted Mercedes-Benz car by Suresh, but it had been given for his travelling purposes.

"There is no gift or anything. We sometimes take our friends' vehicle to travel. There is no issue. Is there any record that he has received a gift or anything? Nothing, no record," he said.

Meawhile, Byrathi Suresh clarified that he has not gifted any car to Siddaramaiah. "The car belongs to me. Since we left to a resort in bus after the CLP meeting, my driver had parked the car near Siddaramaiah's residence. He did not even know that it was parked there. Siddaramaiah and some of my friends use my cars when needed. I have not gifted any car to anyone," he clarified.

In June last year, Siddaramaiah was in the eye of a controversy after the then minister K J George allegedly gifted him a Toyota Land Cruiser with fuel coupons for a year.

George, then, had deflected the charges by saying that he had lent the vehicle as Siddaramaiah was uncomfortable travelling long distances in an Innova.

Earlier in February 2016, Siddaramaiah had been mired in controversy over a Rs 70 lakh worth diamond-studded Hublot watch gifted to him. He later handed over the watch to then Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa amid uproar in the assembly, declaring it a state asset.

Both the opposition BJP and JD(S) members had staged a dharna in the well of the House.

Countering the allegations, Siddaramaiah had said that the pre-owned "Hublot Big Bang-301-M" wrist watch was presented to him by his Dubai-based NRI friend Dr Girish Chandra Varma as a personal gift. Siddaramiah also said Varma had no official dealings with the government of Karnataka or its organisations.

Check the number plate of the cars these VIPs travel and you will be surprised to find that none of them are registered against their names. It will always be some business entity that will be the registered owner. Indeed the article correctly quotes "no records". That is true for most vehicles used by politicians. They know very well how not to flaunt their ill-gotten money.

Only hope is that they will ensure good roads for these expensive vehicles to be used rather than spend most of its time in the garages for maintenance due to driving on ill maintained roads.

If IT department wants to investigate, there are plenty of data in this connected world. The Vehicle manufacturers these days maintain data such as when it was serviced, what payment was made and who did it etc. Just collate that data and they will be surprised to see the amount of unaccounted money floating around these luxury cars.

Well, when PM settles for nothing less than BMW 7 series 760 Li costing about $ 1.5 million of tax payer's money, what's wrong with an ex CM accepting a gift from a friend that probably is ten times less expensive?

There you go! Are you too embarrassed to admit that Vajapayee is the one who started BMW tradition? Modi, a strong proponent of Swadeshi, make in India etc in WORDS, had a proposal from Mahindras that they would provide a customised Made in India, official car sporting all the features of his BMW, but lo and behold, he turned it down!
If the Merc in question is a Bribe, prove it and punish both giver and taker! Also don't forget Sahara Dairy, if you've forgotten already, just google.
