Mangalore, Dec 17: Miscreants vandalized a computer training shop belonging to P B D’Sa, district president, People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), on Wednesday December 17.

The incident occurred at about 6.40 pm. The vandals stoned the Blue Chip Computer Academy and allegedly assaulted Winnifred D’Sa, wife of P B D’Sa, who was sitting in the front office. She was rushed to hospital immediately and discharged after treatment.

Eyewitnesses have claimed that five people were found behaving suspiciously in the shop on Wednesday afternoon. The same persons are alleged to have later attacked the shop. This office is also frequently used for PUCL activities.

Three coin phone boxes, two computer monitors, and partition glasses have been damaged as a result of the attack.

Speaking to daijiworld.com, P B D’Sa said that the attack was a result of his supporting Kannada evening newspaper ‘Karavali Ale’. Some miscreants, said to be followers of a certain religious leader, have been troubling Karavali Ale sellers in the city over the past few days. The PUCL president said that the attacks were a repercussion of his support of B V Sitaram, the editor of the newspaper.

Superintendent of police Sateeshkumar, deputy superintendent of police D Dharmaiah, and other senior police officials visited the spot. A case has been registered at Pandeshwar police station.

Many of us Mangaloreans living here in the Middle East for several years, have been looking forward to return home to Mangalore and settle, after years of living away. However, the recent events are sending shock waves. We fail to understand what has happened to that beautiful and peaceful city that we left behind? The people involved in all these incidents are not outsiders, but our own people. From a tolerant society we have turned ourselves into monsters hell bent on destroying everything that is good and beautiful. Our law enforcement has gone to dogs and anti social elements with the support of politicians, mafia, religious extremists have taken charge of our city. This is terrorism of another kind. Something has to be done immediatley, before we lose everything. Community heads, the educated class, teachers, religious elders, eminent lawyers, educationists and all well meaning citizens should come together and formulate plans to clean up our city. We cannot rely on the police and the politicians any more. They have failed us completely.

It is a heinous act. I condemn this cowardly act. If a civilian or citizen has any grouse against anybody else, s/he should utilize proper legal/ judicial channels. Anybody who settles scores on her/ his own is an anti-national, anti-social, and anti-humanity. Police and administrators, please act fast and justly arrest the cowardly culprits, and prove that you are capable of justice and sincerity. People ridicule you and your families for you being puppets in the hands of dirty politicians and communalists! Aren't you ashamed?
