Was not a PM afraid to speak to press: Manmohan Singh

New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS): In an apparent dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is yet to hold a press conference, his predecessor and Congress veteran Manmohan Singh on Tuesday said as a Prime Minister, "he was never afraid of speaking to the press".

Speaking at the launch of his book "Changing India", the former Prime Minister also asserted that India was destined to become a major economic global power.

A set of five volumes, "Changing India" details his life as an economist as well as his 10-year period at the helm of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) regime.

"I was not the Prime Minister who was afraid of talking to the press. I met the press regularly, and on every foreign trip that I undertook, I had a press conference on return.

"There are large number of those press conferences which have been described in the book," he said at the event.

"People say I was a silent Prime Minister, but these volumes will speak for themselves. I don't want to boast about my achievements as a Prime Minister, but the events that took place are well described in these volumes," he said.

His remarks follow that of Congress President Rahul Gandhi ridiculing Modi for not holding a press conference ever since becoming the Prime Minister in 2014.

Talking about future of the country, Manmohan Singh said despite all the hiccups, India was destined to become a major global powerhouse.

"The emergence of India as a major global power is one such idea whose time has come and no power on earth can stop such an idea," said Singh quoting Victor Hugo, whom he had quoted as the then Finance Minister during his historic 1991 budget speech.

It's may true, Mr. Singh was shadowed by Gandhi family, because he is a soft spoken person. But no one can question his credibility and honesty as a finance minister and prime minister. He worked 100 % capacity for the country and people of India. Who ever misled the people against him they paying heavy price for their karma.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi keeps claiming historical firsts. However, the one thing he can genuinely claim as a real first is the fact that he is the first prime minister in democratic India to never have held a press conference.
Unlike Modi, who is an elected prime minister, Singh was a nominated prime minister. But Singh did not shy away from press briefings. He held at least two each year and regularly spoke to the media aboard his flight during foreign trips.
Not once did the “journalist” interrupt him or ask a follow-up question. This was a prime example of the embedded “Modi megaphones” in the media.
Modi has also discontinued the practice of the prime minister having a press advisor who used to be a point person for the media. Before Modi, all prime ministers, including Atal Behari Vajpayee, had a senior journalist or an official as to press advisor. Now the media has no clue as to whom to call in the PMO.
Modi prefers a one-way dialogue with his Twitter handles, his NAMO app and his radio monologue “Mann Ki baat“. The trouble is that no questions are tolerated or allowed in this one way spiel.

Hazaaron Jawabon Se Acchi Hai Meri Khamoshi is rightly said by the worlds most educated former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. It is better than Modiji's "Ek jhoot ko chupane ke liye 100 jhoot"

Mute Modi, Why is the Prime Minister terrified of holding even a single press conference on his government own policies and schemes in neutral avenue represented by the International and national unbiased journalism?

Dr. Singh is a renowned economist who as Finance Minister first and then as Prime Minister showed the right direction for the Indian economy. His change of economic ideology for the country has helped it to rise as a global economic power. A worthy son of Mother India.
