HC rejects plea challenging election of DUSU president

New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS): The Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea of National Students' Union of India's Sunny Chillar challenging the election of former Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) president Ankiv Baisoya.

Justice Yogesh Khanna dismissed Chillar's plea who has challenged election of Baisoya alleging he has used forged documents to secure admission in the university.

Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand told the court that if any major office-bearer's post falls vacant only two months after the elections, the Vice President may be promoted to the post of President, as per the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee.

The Lyngdoh Committee says that in the event of the office of any major post of office-bearer falling vacant within two months of elections, re-elections should be conducted. Otherwise, the Vice President may be promoted to the post of President and Joint Secretary to the post of Secretary, as the case may be.

The court was hearing Chillar's plea seeking action against Ankiv Baisoya, who had used forged certificates for securing admission into the university.

Baisoya resigned from the post of president after he was expelled by university for submitting fake documents for securing admission into the university.

Chillar was the presidential candidate in this year's Delhi University Students Union election, losing to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad's (ABVP) Baisoya.

Baisoya belonged to the the Department of Buddhist Studies and defeated Sunny Chhillar of Shivaji College by a margin of 1,724 votes on September 12.

On November 14, the university expelled Baisoya for submitting fake documents from Thiruvalluvar University at Vellore in Tamil Nadu to secure admission in the university.

On November 15, Baisoya in a Facebook post said he was resigning from his post. The ABVP, too, suspended him.

The ABVP had won the posts of President, Vice President and Joint Secretary in this year's DUSU election.
