Italy following 'tragic' Strasbourg attack: Foreign Minister

Rome, Dec 13 (IANS/AKI): Italy is "closely watching" developments relating to the "tragic" gun attack on a Christmas market in the eastern French city of Strasbourg, Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi tweeted on Wednesday.

"Through the foreign ministry's crisis unit we are closely watching developments relating to the tragic events in Strasbourg," read the tweet.

"My thoughts are with the victims, the injured and their families. Italy stands shoulder to shoulder with France," the tweet added.

Police were on Wednesday hunting for the alleged gunman who escaped from the Strasbourg Christmas market late on Tuesday after killing at least three people and injuring a dozen.

Police identified the suspected gunman as Strasbourg-born Cherif Chekatt, 29, who was known to the intelligence services as a potential security risk.

French prosecutors said they were treating Tuesday night's attack as an act of terrorism.
