Belagavi: No proposal for new government medical colleges in DK –Shivakumar

Belagavi, Dec 12: Minister for medical education, D K Shivakumar, clarified that there is no proposal to set up any new government medical college in Dakshina Kannada district at present.

He was responding to a question raised by MLC, Ivan D'Souza, during the zero hour at the legislative council session here on Tuesday December 11. He said that setting up of a new medical college involves expenditure of Rs 610 crore annually for the government.

"16 government medical colleges are functional in the state as of now. They have 2,550 MBBS seats and 942 post-graduation and diploma seats. At the same time, no proposal to set up new private medical colleges in Karnataka is pending with the government at present," he informed.

    Wenlock hospital is just short of few cents of land to meet minimum requirement land stipulated by MCI for setting up government medical college and that shortage is available from land owned by state government next to it. As of now, Kasturba Medical College has no clinical facility for their MBBS course in Mangalore and has leased out district hospital facilities for clinical exposure for their UG students. Whenever corrupt politicians run short of money, they will raise the issue of setting up government medical college in Mangalore and KMC on fear of loosing the much needed clinical facility will take care of them. It is a routine since 2008 and no surprise in this present statement too. People who are sincerely following up the statements on new government medical college at Mangalore are real fools....! Who told democracy is a system ensures that we get always less than what we deserve....!

    Govt colleges in Mangalore and Udupi are mandatory as they have huge number of population to be covered in terms of Medical education and health care of community,need of the hour is the political will of the two districts

    Because our MP , MLA's, MLC's , corporation members make false promises and after they win they forget .People also forget and wait for next elections for new promises and so on ... .We also have private institution who are greedy and most of our representative own them or part of them

    Udupi and manglore too need government medical colleges. See the status of government district hospital at udupi. One specialist doctor has to work 24 hours in some department. No human can do that. Why they not filling vacancy of specialist doctors at District and Taluka hospitals.?
    Each PHCs given 40-50 lakh rupees to construct Labour theaters. But MBBS doctor cant conduct delivery and they are not available after 4 pm. Why waste money then .? equipments are lying rusting
    there now. Rather stregthen CHC and Taluka hospital with labour theater , Obstreticians, Anestheiologists, Paediatricians and other supporting staff.

    It is tragedy that after so many years also our MP & MLA's of Dakshina Kannada are not able to get a government college for Mangalore. We have a Wenlock hospital & Lady Goshan Hospital , in Mangalore which is far superior to any other hospitals in other districts except Bangalore. The Government and the people's representatives are aware that they will loose a huge income from private medical institutions who are paying a meager sum to the government for using hospital facilities. The Hospitals if converted to a Medical college will give admission to minimum of 250 students for MBBS and equal number to Nursing and allied health services. A strong lobby of the private medical college of Mangalore are hampering the conversion. If places like Koppal, Gadag, Gulbarga, Hassan can have govt medical colleges why not in Udipi and Mangalore . Even Ivan asks the question but he also knows the answer why it is not being done. Only Mr. Khader when he was Minister for Medical education in Siddaramaih Govt. tried to establish a Govt medical college at Mangalore .Once he made the statement within 15 days his portfolio was changed. The private Medical colleges know that establishing Medical college in Mangalore and udipi will give at least 400 students to study MBBS and at the rate of Rs 5- 8lakh per year per seat in private colleges they will loose an annual income of Rs 144 Crore per year (32 Cr per year and 4.5 years per student). This is apart from the PG students -who pay a huge amount. The private medical colleges will never allow a Govt medical college to come up in Udipi and Mangalore. The statements by MP, MLA, Ministers are only for public consumption. Udipi & Mangalore will never get the two govt medical colleges which are due but never given consent.
