Zomato delivery man caught eating food to be delivered on tape; company sacks him

Daijiworld Media Network

New Delhi, Dec 11: A video of Zomato’s food delivery executive caught on tape eating food meant for delivery has caused major embarrassment to the food delivery giant.

The video shared on twitter by @Madan_Chikna shows the delivery executive opening packs of food meant for delivery and eating out of them. After eating a couple of spoons from a pack, he levels the food to make it seem untouched. He then does the same with another pack and later seals the food packets and sets out for delivery.

The video was shared widely with some expressing concern over services provided while others trolled Zomato.

However, Zomato was quick to respond and issued a statement, "If true, this is unfortunate and not in line with our beliefs. We take this very seriously and will soon introduce tamper-proof tapes, and other precautionary measures to ensure we safeguard against this.”

Soon after, Zomato shared another blog post where they apologised.

“We take these kinds of reports extremely seriously and upon thorough investigation, we’ve found that the video was shot in Madurai. The person in the video happened to be a delivery partner on our fleet. We have spoken to him at length – and while we understand that this was a human error in judgement, we have taken him off our platform,” they wrote.

The blog post went on to add that the video highlights a real possibility for tampering with the food on the way to delivery from a restaurant. “We take this very seriously and will soon introduce tamper-proof tapes, and other precautionary measures to ensure we add an extra layer of safeguard against such behaviour. Additionally, we will educate our delivery fleet of over 1.5 lac partners to highlight or escalate any such deviations to us, while also encouraging our users — the custodians of our platform — to highlight the smallest of anomalies to us,” the post read.

However, soon after the news of the employee being fired went viral, many felt that the punishment was too harsh as the delivery boys work hard and hunger is beyond one’s control. Many expressed their sympathy towards the employee.

Hungry or not. using the same spoon again and again. This is not hygiene too. Somebody has to eat that food without knowing that he is eating leftover meal.Do you eat half eaten food apart from your family?

If Hunger made the [person like this, then do you support for hunger someone is killing someone to steal money or any valuable items is also fine? If someone steals valuable items and sell it to get money to buy food. According to you the police should leave the thieves if they are doing that because of hunger.
Whichever religion, the religion proves to be good if the person belongs to that religion does anything good for others. If you do anything good for others then ur religion supports you. No religion supports robbery / theft /or any king of criminality.

Maybe. But I refuse to eat what has been contaminated by someone else. You may eat. Now dont bother to compare it with - wont your mother/wife taste the food before serving? Well this guy is no one to me. Since you have brought in religion let me tell you that by religion and caste I am pure vegetarian. The last thing I want is to eat some other guys "echill".

Already he has a job which feeds him... and if he is hungry doesn't mean that he can eat from customers pack and deliver them with the leftovers... we don't even feed the beggars with our leftover food.. as a mother I am not even giving my children anything from my plate when eating...

Without any extra investigation, he must kicked out immediately and also fined at least Rs. 1 Lac for his misbehavior.

It was very unhygienic for putting the food in his mouth and then using the same spoon to spreading and leveling the food. If he has any sickness then he is putting several other health at risk.

The company should ensure that meals are provided to their employees who deliver food, or else a hungry man delivering nice smelling food has a good chance of eating that same food.

Zomato should give instructions to it's partners that all packages should be taped with tamper proof tapes before the delivery. In the video it shows that tamper proof tape exists in the delivery bike itself & it is mistake. However, the man seemed to be hungry & ate from the package which is wrong. The quantity he ate would have cost him only Rs. 10 to eat outside. Grave mistake that too on an open road.

Buying from a third party like online and delivering food by a third party not advisable you never know what is given to you and what is done to the food. Buying online is not favourable since you have not seen the product and felt it, tried it. Our smart Indians have to take care.

    Hello!

    Hunger drives away reasoning.

It's only food he has stolen AND not someone's property.

    Let him be excused.

Ask the good folks at zomato or whatever... why they did not tamper proof their packets?
