Hassan: Train hit - tusker killed near Sakleshpur

Hassan, Dec 11: A 20-year-old tusker that was alone, died near Kakanamane in Sakleshprur taluk in the district on Monday December 10. This is the third elephant to have lost its life in the recent past in similar fashion.

The incident happened at the 800/30 milestone near Kakanamane. When the elephant was crossing the railway tracks, the Karwar - Bengaluru passenge train that was moving towards Bengaluru hit the elephant, causing its death, forest officials said.

The officials guess that this tusker would have strayed to this area from Belur or Chikkamagaluru areas in search of food. After the train hit the elephant, it suffered serious injuries, fell down, and breathed its last within sometime thereafter, they said.

Postmortem was conducted on the spot and funeral was conducted. On June 3 this year, two baby elephants had died in similar fashion after having been hit by train near Yadakumeri in Sakleshpur taluk
