Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 11: To register their protest against the central government's move to privatize six airports in the country including the international airport here, members of Airports Authority Employees Union (AAEU) and other organizations began three-day hunger strike on Monday, December 10.

AAEU Mangaluru branch president, Arvind Gaonkar, and secretary, Shravan Kumar, who were present when the strike began, addressed the protesters.

Kasargod MP, P Karunakaran, met those undertaking hunger strike. He promised to them to raise the topic of privatization of airports in the Lok Sabha and to oppose the move strongly.

In the meanwhile, civil aviation minister, Suresh Prabhu, is expected to arrive at the airport here today afternoon. He might hold meeting with the MP and officials of the airport. MP Nalin Kumar will meet him and hand over a memorandum seeking supplementary moves for achieving integrated development of the airport including laying of new connecting roads, introduction of additional flights etc.

I strongly opposes the move of Govt. of India to privatize Mangalore airport as Airports Authority of India is providing excellent service as airport operator, if govt. really wants to develop this airport let them bring changes in customer services, airlines service, immigration services and security systems which lacks the sense of customer service.
Mangalore airport has been develop to its maximum capacity available and there is no further scope in respect of infrastructure. Now Govt. wants to sell this airport in the name of development which I feel is a scam ahead of next election.

Dear citizens of Mangalore I strongly oppose the privatisation Mangalore Airport. It's nothing but selling ready made Airport to private parties to make money. In Mangalore Airport AAI is giving excellent service as a Airport operator, By selling it to private parties the services of Airlines , immigration, customs will remain unchanged. The cost public and passenger will go up as the charges like UDF , parking , restaurant will be raised and will be very expensive.

I strongly oppose the government s move to private the Mangalore Airport

Can someone tell these guys that there may not be an airport in Mangalore in a few years. The only solution is privatization, when private companies will invest money and expand the airport and improve facilities. Send these leaders to Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Cochin and Hyderabad. May be then their eyes will open.

Brother you have not understood what government has planned in the name of PPP. Let me make you understand what the scam is. Any Airport the development work scope is limited to expansion of runway, taxiway, aprons and aerobriges. In Mangalore Airport it has reached its optimum level of growth in respect of all these facilities.
In 2006 the new runway to its maximum capacity is constructed, 2010 new integrated building was constructed and now the work is awarded for further expansion of Terminal building and work under process.
2018 two more aerobridges has been added parking bay has been increased to 14.

And now Gov wants to sell Mangalore Airport in the name of development after completing all the works and exhausting it's funds.. It's big scam which public doesn't come to know.
AAI which is operating now is a Mini ratna organization which is paying hundreds of crores as dividends.

If Government really wants to develop airports let them develop Like mysore, Hasan, Shiomga etc.. Let me make it clear that by privatisation only the Airport operators will change and the Airline services, custom service, immigration Services remain the same

I strongly oppose Governments decisions to privatize Manglore Airport

I partially agree to what you are saying.
The development of the present airport is not at the maximum instead it has been developed on the basis of funds invested by AAI.
Once the airport is is given to the private sector, the private sector will start investing and the airport will surely develop.
Coming to the runway extension, Previously when the second concrete runway was built, it was built to meet the needs for a 737 Boieng and Airbus 320 aircrafts and not for the aircrafts higher than that. Now, things have changed and M'lore wants something bigger and better. AAI does'nt have enough funds to invest on the extension and the state government is also not ready to invest. Once, privatised it will be developed by the money invested by the private sector under the PPP model.
Coming to your idea of privatisation of other airports in Karnataka, as of now they're built well and good for the current levels of those cities. M'lore is in an another level now, to reach the needs of the new level, privatisation is neccesary because the government is not ready to invest as they are lacking funds.

@ Robin , P Karunakaran has lot of business here. He want Kannur Airport get developed with more facility and with more flights flying in-out. He doesnt want more facilities and development happen in Mangalore Airport under private participation. So he is going to oppose the move of privatisation in Loksabha.

I would have done same protest if I was one of the employee.....
but, is that necessary ?? if you are doing you work sincerely then you may get more paid with private company !,
one don't want to work honestly and want govt. benefits which paid by tax payers money without any one taking responsibility !
did someone seen any of the state run companies officials are answerable for losses or any frauds ?? simply they suspend them for some time or transfer !!! horrible to see,
I have seen news that in Singapore they paid excess income to citizens ! that means their govt. companies are doing profit !

Dear Mr Paul .. I feel very sad for your knowledge. You have not understood what is PPP and what Governments is planning to do with Mangalore Airport. What do you think only the Mangalore’s are flying out from here? Maximum public are from Kerala.. and why he should not be bothered? Do you know who provides luggage services to you? Airlines service? What is AAI ? You better learn all this first before you comment. As far as me concerned Airport has been maintained very neat and clean may better than your home k

Correctly said Mr. Shakeel, first of all these people doesn't know the difference between airline operator and servic provider. Airports Authority of India is only service provider, and they developed Mangalore airport to the world class.
