Bikinis should be worn in private spaces only, not in temples, churches: Goa Minister

Panaji, Dec 10 (IANS): Bikinis should only be worn in private spaces in Goa and the swim wear should not be allowed in the state's temples and churches, Goa's PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar said on Monday.

Dhavalikar, who recently returned from an official trip to Portugal, said in the past, his comments on bikinis were blown out of proportions, in the same way as his demand for an apology for injustices meted out to Goa during the colonial rule from Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa were also blown out of proportions. The latter, the Minister said, cost him several seats in the 2017 Assembly elections.

"I had then said that they (those wearing bikinis) should not visit temples. This is not our culture. They should not come to churches (wearing bikinis) and people in your family will also agree that bikinis should not be worn in temples, in public places. They can do that in private places," Dhavalikar told a press conference in Panaji.

Dhavalikar had come under flak in 2014 after he said that bikinis and short skirts were "unsafe" and against Indian culture and should not be worn in public places, including beaches.

Lavu Mamledar, an MLA from the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, which Dhavalikar is a senior member of, had also demanded setting up of a special "bikini" beach on Goa's beaches, where access would be allowed only with an entry fee.

Dhavalikar had demanded an apology from Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa to Goa in 2016, a few months before the February 2017 state Assembly elections, while the Assembly discussed moving a motion to congratulate Antonio Costa, who is of Goan origin, on his appointment as PM. Dhavalikar now hints at a political motive behind the controversy.

"It was just two months before elections. That (comment) was hyped by everyone. Because of that I lost seven seats," Dhavalikar said.

With the needle of forensic findings now pointing to a clear link between the killers of journalist Gauri Lankesh, Kannada scholar M.M. Kalburgi and communist leader Govind Pansare of Kolhapur, the spotlight is once again on the shadowy Goa-based Sanatan Sanstha.
Almost two decades after the hardline Hindutva organisation parked itself in Goa – it was registered by a trust deed in the state in March 1999 very little is known of what goes on inside the Sanatan Sanstha’s ‘ashram’ in Ramnathi, Ponda.
It isn’t clear if it was Athavale’s wife’s Goa links, or the fact that he received a warm embrace from saffron-leaning politicians in Goa, that prompted the shift of the Sanatan headquarters from Panvel in Maharashtra, to Ponda in Goa.
But Ramnathi, in Bandora village, Ponda taluka, would have seemed the natural choice. As home to a cluster of some of the biggest and best known temples in Goa, Ponda is both a religious and cultural hub.

The taluka is also the political base of the controversial Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) politicians Sudin and Deepak Dhavlikar, who are the Sanatan’s biggest benefactors and supporters in Goa. Both the Dhavlikar brothers’ wives, Jyoti and Lata, are sadhaks at the Sanatan, something they propagate quite openly. The Dhavlikars have said their wives are Sanatan members to “help promote our Hindu dharma and culture”.

Lata Dhavlikar, whose husband was a minister in the Goa government till he lost the election earlier this year, waded into a controversy two years ago when she publicly asked parents to stop sending their children to convent schools, and pronounced rape was on the rise in the country because Indian women were becoming more and more westernized.

The Sanatan and HJS went into overdrive to put together the first All Indian Hindu Convention “for establishment of Hindu Rashtra”. Goa's PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar GOA’S next "SANATHAN SANSTHA" CHIEF MINISTER?

This non- sense why dragging church and temples in to bikinis. Who said people goto temple and churches in bikinis, I think this guy never visited even temples. Even in Brazil people don’t wear bikinis or incomplete dresses in churches, although in Brazil topless women allowed in cities.

This idiot minister should understand that those who wear bikinis in public places are allergic to go to holy places anyway. What is he trying to prove here????. Is there no law and order in the state and police to take care of that?????. He thinks by this stupid self disgracing statement to his own BJP party he has conquered the world but he may have pleased his Chaddis in Nagpur.

Because he has never been to any temple or any holy places in his life. What they wear in beeches he thinks people go to any other places with that same dress. He is making himself sure by this statement that he is consolidating firm loyalty and appeasing Nagpur Democratic Allinace (NDA).
