Bengaluru: Smoking now only in designated zones in bars, pubs, hotels and restaurants

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Nov 20: The Karnataka government has mandated bars, pubs, hotels and restaurants to have designated smoking areas, if the management wishes to allow its customers to smoke.

Karnataka Urban Development and Housing Minister, U T Khader, has warned that the licences of the eateries will be cancelled if they are found violating the rules as per Karnataka Prohibition of Smoking and Protection of Health of Non-Smokers Act 2001.

Smoking is allowed in the restricted area only after obtaining a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the civic body concerned.

In July 2018, a high-powered committee on tobacco control had mooted the proposal before the BBMP for Bengaluru. The move is to protect the rights of non-smokers and curb the effects of passive smoking, as per Karnataka Prohibition of Smoking and Protection of Health of Non-Smokers Act and the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).

The same rule will now be implemented across the state by the coalition government.

What about common areas like market, bus-stops and street ?

Its a nightmare asking the chimneys to stop or move away from standing public waiting for bus or to shop.

Whoever passively smokes in the bus stands should share the cost of cigarette and give it to the active smoker!!!
Why should you have all the fun ...free of cost?

At one condition. That the smoker gives promissory note to pay the bill when the passive smokers (who paid his cigarette cost) fall prey to Cancer.

Good move. Must be implemented and monitored strictly. Thee should be a toll free number for the Public to inform of any violations. Give deadlines to make these designated smoking zones and "No Objection " only after inspecting the smoking zone from all angles.

How come its OK if cow-slaughter ban is implemented in one state, not in another ? OK if BJP ruled Goa bans slaughter but gets the supply from Karnataka ? When its applicable to Hindu sentiments do you ask if they have separate Passport for Goa and Karnataka ?

Smoking is an universal culprit, not regional. Support its curtailing - do not apply your politics.
