Dubai: Coastal Friends UAE holds open throwball tournament

Dubai, Nov 19: Under the aegis of Coastal Friends UAE, an open throwball tournament was held on November 16 at Bilva Indian School ground, Dubai.

This tournament is being a first ever successful tournament of the year organised by Coastal Friends UAE which attracted all the people who were present.

The event started with the prayer song in the morning invoking God’s blessings on the tournament with the presence of all the team players and supporters. Seema Rodrigues of Coastal Friends UAE had taken initiative to take an oath along with participating team players. Sweeny hosted the event with her beautiful phrases. The tournament was inaugurated by all the kids who presented to the tournament by releasing balloons into the air and both UAE and Indian National Anthems were sung with the respected manner. The special commentator of the day Vinod Shetty added thrill and glamour to the matches with his wonderful and humorous commentary.

On this occasion a special congratulation token was presented to Sabitha Mathias, who owes the title ‘Gulf Voice of Mangalore 2018’ which was held on November 9 in Kuwait.

To encourage all the players a famous Sandalwood actor Anant Nagarkatte known as Anant Nag and ACME owner Harish Sherigar visited the playground and wished good-luck to all. Further, Anant Nag sang a Kannada song to entertain all the presented.

As many as 17 teams participated in the whole day’s thrilling tournament (Eight teams for men’s throwball game and nine teams for women’s throwball game).

Women’s semifinals were played among four teams namely Konkans Dubai vs Abu Dhabi Karnataka Sangha and KCO vs Bunts Dubai. Konkans Dubai won the semi-final match and on the other side Bunts Dubai. Men’s semifinal match was played among four teams namely Coastal Friends UAE vs Mogaveers and ACME Mangalore Strickers vs Bunts Dubai. Coastal Friends UAE won the semi-final match and on the other side ACME Mangalore Strickers.

In the final match for men’s, Coastal Friends UAE (under the captainship of Flavan D’Souza) won against ACME Mangalore Strikers (under the captainship of Rijo Jose). In women’s final, Bunts Dubai (under the captainship of Latha Shetty) won the match against Konkans Dubai (under the captainship of Marina Menezes) in three sets.

In addition, Coastal Friends UAE held Mix throwball matches to show the unity among all the teams for men as well as women with the team names Mercury Risers, Earth Hurricanes, Ultimate Uranus, Saturn Superstars, Jupiter Kings, Mars Stars, Venus Strikers and Neptune Chargers. It was great to precise the energy, unity, involvement and support among mix teams.

Women’s Mix Tournament won by Saturn Superstars under the captainship of Sandhya (KCO team Captain) and 1st runner-up was Jupiter Kings under the captainship of Solita (AMS team Captain) along with each member of KD, BD, AMS, MOG, CFU, ADKS, KCO and MU.

Men’s Mix Tournament won by Venus Strikers under the captainship of Valento (MU team Captain) and 1st runner-up was Mercury Risers under the captainship of Pramod (MOG team Captain) along with each member of KD, BD, AMS, MOG, CFU, ADKS, KCO and MU.

The winner results are as follows:

Men’s Throwball – Coastal Friends UAE (Winner) and ACME Mangalore Strikers (1st runner up)

Women’s Throwball – Bunts Dubai (Winner) and Konkans Dubai (1st runner up)

Other prizes

Men’s Throwball: Best Striker – Alan Mendonca (Coastal Friends UAE), Best All-Rounder – Chetan (ACME Mangalore Strikers), Best Defender - Wilson Gonsalves (Coastal Friends UAE) and Best Entertaining Player – Melcome (Abu Dhabi Karnataka Sangha).

Women’s Throwball: Best Striker – Shashi Shetty (Bunts Dubai), Best All-Rounder – Dhanashree Shetty (Bunts Dubai), Best Receiver – Fiona (Konkans Dubai) and Best Entertaining Player – Shubha (Konkans Dubai).

All the teams played the games in good sportsman spirit. Sebastian, Abu Dhabi and Lazarus Dmello gave away the trophies to the winners and runners. The referees Melwyn D’Souza and team were felicitated for their dedicated service throughout the day. The tournament ended up by thanking each and every one who helped the grand success of the tournament.
