Moodbidri, Nov 17: Veteran historian and researcher, Dr Sha Shettar, expressed the need for having a relook at the origin of Kannada language. Speaking after inaugurating the three-day 'Alva's Nudisiri - 2018' here on Friday November 16, he said that the perception that Kannada language was born out of the stone inscription known as Halmidi inscription, is only half true. He said that even after debates over the last 850 years, it has not been possible to correctly pinpoint the origin of Kannada language.

Shettar said that Kannada had also influenced Sanskrit but so far this has not been correctly identified. He wanted efforts to be made in this direction at least now. At the same time, he said that Kannada is eternally grateful to Sanskrit for enriching it, adding that when two languages meet, they give rise to multiple cultures.

He felt that freedom of expression was more prevalent during the era of kings, when things like censor board were not existent. He also pointed out to the fact that no poet had ever been executed then.

Vice chancellor of Hampi Kannada University, Dr Mallika S Ghanti, who presided, said in her presidential address that she felt like having been received by the parents and siblings on the return of a bride from her husband's home, going by the grand and affectionate welcome she got here. She thanked Dr Mohan Alva for extending this grand reception, and termed him as her elder brother. She said that the present generation has the responsibility of shaping the present and future when trying to showcase Karnataka through its literature, spirituality, folklore and multi-lingual culture.

"We have to build our creativity, social concern, religious environment, political principles, variety of languages etc to shape our future. We have to make conscious effort to relate the past history with the current goings on by making use of our willpower, she felt. Agreeing that it is not easy to obliterate the principle of self-centric uniformity that was born with the humans into multiplicity, she said she firmly believes in it. At the same time, she felt laws cannot achieve this objective. She felt that when the society and people commit mistakes, it is up to the poets and writers to speak up. She called upon them to introspect on how they behaved during such situations.

Over 70,000 people visited the venue of Alva's Nudisiri at Vidyagiri here on Friday. "Ratnakara Varni' dais in Sant Shishunala Shariff hall is the venue for the main convenetion and symposiums. K V Subbanna open air theatre, Ku Shi Haridas Bhat dais, Kamala Chattopadhyaya dais, Aand Bolar and Dr V S Acharya auditoriums have been the venues where art forms like musc, dance, Harikatha, Dasavani, dance drama, Yakshagana and other cultural events are unfolding. About 200 cooks have been serving the people in two elaborate dining halls built here. Over 125 persons have been deployed to take care of cleanliness and hygiene. With over 36,000 registering themselves as delegates for the event, this Nudisiri has broken previous records.
