Mangaluru priest Fr Vineet Pereira serving in Varanasi attacked by group, arrested on false charges

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (DC)

Lucknow/Mangaluru, Nov 17: In a shocking incident a catholic priest a native of Mangaluru, serving in Varanasi was arrested on false charges after being beaten by pro-Hindu group members on November 15.

According to reports from UCA news, Fr Vineet Vincent Pereira (43) serving in Gohana town in Mau district and some of the inmates of the ashram were attacked by members of Hindu Yuva Vahini (youth force) on November 15.

"When I objected, they beat me. One pulled me down holding my hair and dragged out. Then they hit me left and right. Those gathered around rescued us," said Fr Pereira.

On the same day, the local police arrived at the ashram and arrested the priest on the basis of a complaint filed by the attackers on charges of rioting and disturbing public peace. The each charge carries a maximum imprisonment for two years if proven guilty.

Fr John Abraham, the diocesan vicar general commenting on the incident said, "Fr Pereira lives a hermit-like existence and regularly conducts prayers for around 1,500 of these people at his ashram. None of them have become Christians, but they follow Christian spiritual values." He further said that the attackers must have been angry over Fr Pereira's popularity with Hindus who identify themselves as devotees of Christ.

Fr Abraham further said that ever since the BJP came to power in the state in 2017, there is a rise in anti-Christian campaign and the attack was also part of it.

Fr Pereira too said that most of the Hindus were attracted towards him since some of those attending his prayers were healed of sickness. "I used to conduct prayer meetings in nine villages but after four attempted attacks on me, the prayers were limited to the ashram."

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had founded the Hindu Yuva Vahini youth group in 2002. The group was aimed at re-conversion of Christians back to Hinduism.

According to the Religious Liberty Commission of Evangelical Fellowship of India, there have been 44 anti-Christian incidents in the past two months, while only 71 such incidents were documented across India.

As per some local sources, Fr Pereira hails from Dakshina Kannada district.

One would think that CM Yogi is busy with GOD's work - Lord Rama deserves better.

This wicked Yogi is doing DEVIL'S work - he gets orders from New Delhi! The Grand Masters! Bandal Shah and the PM.

Please look at the contribution Christians and Muslims have made and still making for the development of India! and specifically India's poverty-stricken majority!

The majority has become lazy and jealous rather than join hands with the minority and work well for their own development???????????? Think of Ache Din ! Ache din have come only for a few privileged BIG WIGS - the Bandal Babu and Demonetization Babu.

Uttar Pradesh is land where Lord Rama born, I wonder how come 2000 people attended in the Prayer hall by identifying themselves as Christians? Proper inquiry should be conducted on this account and those who convert sell religion should be punished severely.

Let us pray for few minutes specially for the priest who has to go to such harsh punishment from the evil minded group. Let us also pray for yogi CM who is supported to such attack. Hope god give him wisdom and understanding to do good rather act like this ways. It is a shame where people has to live in terror culture where such evil doer has no sympathy toward fellow citizens.

This incidence puts BJP supporters like me into shame. The attack on any religious leaders is condemnable and slapping false charges on him is outrageous.
At the same breath I would also suggest Christians priests to stop attracting innocent Hindus by fake healing sessions. Healing by prayer meetings is absolutely foolish and unscientific.

Persecution of Christians has been foretold in the Bible. And that isn't surprising at all.

It is already existing in many parts of the world. Now it is started in India for the last many years.

However it is a shame that while majority of our Hindu brothers and sisters are all living in harmony irrespective of caste creed and culture of others, a few handful of them feel threatened and insecure of us. They become so called protectors of their God and religion. Doesn't matter even if they don't have means to feed their family. They forget their masters who sit in government chairs are all well protected.

    God save them !!

It is absolutely incorrect and disgraceful to insult or physically attack any religious heads of any community. Let the people practice any religion of their choice. I appeal the govt to do justice in this matter.

Yogi is having jealous on others. He has to teach the people good values of the life. Instead of that he is encouraging Hindu Yuva Vahini youth group to attack others faith and beating them and complaint against them and by forcefully putting the faithful person in the jail. Yogi come out from your dirty mind and teach the youth good value of the life. Your mission is only to teach the people about the relation between man and God. But you entered the politics and living a lavish life. Is it correct? Ask your conscious.

UP Govt has got all the right to investigate whether the healing prayer took place and people got healed through prayer. If yes why are u worried.
U guys also can have prayer session of your own and start healing the people who are sick and depressed and spread peace and Joy. If healing takes place from your prayer then people automatically come to your prayer sessions.

when some one is unable to beat another person spiritually he tries to beat him physically. physical existence is for 100 years . spiritual existence i for ever.

by beating him some how they are paving way for more people to come to Christ. Rome was PAGAN but became Christian, only by martyrs, now this beating will bring down the judgement of God on those who beat him, by making them minority in their own place in the days to come. It is they who are asking for it.

May truth (eternal living God in heaven) give strength to the victims to bear falsehood for a little time.

for attackers = short term gain, long term pain, & the reverse for victim.

Christians are the most persecuted community in the world and i t is no surprise that this type of attack keep happening . We are lucky we live in India where barring the stray incidents we are free to practice our faith. Even 2000 + years of persecution across the world didn't lessen the hunger for Christ but rather increased it , even this incident will further strengthen our faith and have further people coming to the Lord . Fr. Vineet you are doing the job which Lord would be pleased and we are proud off you .
