Madikeri: Alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet - journalist gets bail

Madikeri, Nov 14: Journalist Santosh Thammaiah, who was arrested for his alleged derogatory remarks against the Prophet during a programme titled 'Tipu Karala Mukhagala Anavarana (unveiling of dreadful faces of Tipu)' at Gonikoppal in Kodagu district on November 5, secured conditional bail from the court.

Judge of the court, Mohan Gowda, who heard bail application moved by the journalist for over 30 minutes, granted conditional bail. The Gonikoppal police who arrested the journalist from the house of his in-laws at Javanayyana Palya in Madhugiri taluk, Tumakuru district at 11 pm on Monday, produced him in the court on Tuesday. The police have charged him with passing derisive remarks about the Prophet and Tipu Sultan.


Santosh Thammaiah

Thammaiah reportedly made the above remarks on November 5. Asif from Siddapur in the district had filed a complaint against him in Gonikoppal police station, based on which first information report was registered.

There has been widespread resentment among the people of the district about the arrest of the journalist. Many have been saying that the police are prompt in arresting people speaking against Tipu, whereas remarks made against Ram go unnoticed. Hindu organizations held protest in the town on Tuesday. Hindu Suraksha Vedike has also called for an hour's symbolic Kodagu district bandh on Wednesday from 12 to 1 pm.

In the meantime, four others named in the first information report, P Appanna, Addanda Kariappa, Sudhakar Hosalli and Robert Rozario run the risk of being arrested by the police relating to this case.

    in this case we need to get the views of our so called intellectuals, freedom of speech , secular people. earlier also this kind of remarks are made against different religion. best example prof bhagwan. govt should understand the sentiments of all religion people.

    Among the advantages of belonging to the Sangh parivar is that you get bail immediately, despite i, not only abusing other religions but threatening entire communities as well. Santosh's speech and calls for violence is well documented, yet he gets bail in a jiffy. Many Muslim youths are in jail for merely criticising political leaders on FB. No one jumps to their rescue, neither journalists nor politicians nor the police

    I'm sorry to say that this report is one-sided and the way it is written, the journalist seems to have spoken to only the Right wing. Firstly, not only were remarks made against the prophet, but the man actually indulged in hate speech as well.

    Many Muslim youth are languishing in jail for longer periods just for an FB post. The journalist says "Many have been saying that the police are prompt in arresting people speaking against Tipu, whereas remarks made against Ram go unnoticed.".

    Who are these "many people" and what are the remarks he is talking of? There have been an equal number asking for his arrest as he deliberately targeted the Muslim community. Why has the journalist not obtained their views as well?

    Recently Mr Bhagwaan has made a derogatory comment agaiinst Lord Ram. Zakir Naik used to Comment that Hindu gods were not Gods. He had made derogatory remarks against lord Ganapathi. Have the authorities arrested them.

    Do you read newspapers at all? Naik, despite having said never of that sort, has had to flee the country as his entire organsation has been banned and he has been labelled a terror sympathiser. I wonder if this Santosh will be labelled a terrorist now. Or do laws apply to only one set of people? Please learn some GK before you indulge in whataboutery

    Sure, I'll be more than satisfied if the Government treats him at least 10% of how they treated Zakir Naik and his organisation. They should ask NIA to file a case - to arrest him without bail, shut down his paper and call it a terror group - just like they did for Dr. Naik

    I think the concept of religion was born because the mankind will leave peacefully and love everything made by God. But, alas, now religion has become the main cause of enmity. My religion is better than others etc. I think people should respect other religions and any creation of God or nature, then problem is solved. After all, we all are guests in this world; we have a limited period of time. So, let love others and hate none.

    I guess in every religion there are many who get brainwashed because of their own weaknesses or due to societal pressures or to get favours from rest of their own community. These people end up being offended on any minor provocation or find an oppurtunity to show their frustration in every little disturbance. However we all have to understand that we cannot stick to our age old religious traditions in the present times, when we have to live in close quarters with people of different faiths. Its high time we keep our religion at home behind closed walls and do not exibit it in public.

    your comment is wrong. anyone believes in god is because they believe that god has created man. not the other way round. Another thing is that there must be different gods, if not why its followers have such contradicting beliefs?
