Work begins on 2 rehab centres for victims of calamities

Poinguinim, Nov 11(TNN): Work has begun on setting up two rehabilitation centres for people likely to be displaced by calamities.

While one centre is located at Nagorcem in Canacona, the other one is located a short distance away, at Mahalwada in Poinguinim. Both projects are expected to be ready by December 2020.

Goa has been chosen along with five other states for the second phase of National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRMP) that is being implemented through the National Disaster Management Authorities.

The four components of the project include early warning dissemination systems, cyclone risk mitigation infrastructures, technical assistance for multi-hazard risk management and project management and implementation support.

The World Bank is funding 10 such centres across the state — six in South Goa and four in North Goa. Each project is estimated to cost about Rs 2.7 crore, a water resources department (WRD) official said.

Excavations are being carried out at both sites in Nagorcem within the municipal limits and Poinguinim to lay the foundation.

“Another such centre at Chapoli under Shristhal panchayat will be also initiated soon,” a (WRD) official said All the three sites were initially government primary schools, but the classes are being conducted in vacant residential areas.

A rehabilitation centre will have rooms for sick people with attached toilets on the ground floor.

“Dormitories for women will be located on the first floor and for men, on the second floor,” the official said.

Cooking facilities and a separate room for a fuel generator will be located on the first floor. In some places, the facilities for ex-ante disaster risk mitigation will be used productively at other times.

“The building halls will not remain idle as they will be allowed to organise community and cultural programmes,” an official in North Goa said.
