Mangaluru, Nov 10: Security has been beefed up at Zilla panchayat ahead of Tipu Jayanti which is scheduled to start at 10 am here on November 10.

Earlier on Friday the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada clamped prohibitory orders to avoid any untoward incident. Holding protests, demonstrations and public events during this period have been banned.

Prohibitory orders have also been imposed in several places in Karnataka, including in Hubli, Dharwad and Shivamogga, with the opposition BJP threatening to disrupt government-sponsored celebrations for the birth anniversary of the controversial 18th century ruler of erstwhile Mysore kingdom, Tipu Sultan.

A day before Section 144 was imposed, the BJP, which had appealed to the JD(S)-Congress government to drop the celebrations, staged demonstrations at several places, including in Bengaluru, Mysuru and Kodagu.

The state government led by H D Kumaraswamy had earlier said that Tipu Jayanti would be celebrated on November 10 in continuation of the previous Congress government's policy. However, Kumaraswamy is not scheduled to attend the main function, which will be inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara.

Tipu Jayanthi is not celebrated in Kerala. Shiv Sena & MNS in Maharashtra celebrate Shivaji Jayanthi as their party event, without spending the taxpayer's money. Why can't Congress-JDS in Karnataka do the same?
