Udupi: Hindu organizations to hold protest against Tipu Jayanti

Udupi, Nov 7: A press conference was held by Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal and Hindu Jagran Vedike at Udupi Press Club on Wednesday November 7 in connection with the protest the pro-Hindu organizations plan to hold against the government's decision to go ahead with the celebration of Tipu Jayanti.

Regional convener of Bajrang Dal's Karnataka (south) unit, Sunil K R, addressing the press conference, termed Tipu Sultan as a person who was bitterly opposed to Kannada language and culture, besides being a communal. "Tipu was a killer who demolished temples and churches. We are strongly opposed to celebrating his birthday. We hereby urge Karnataka government to immediately drop the decision to organize Tipu Jayanti. Tipu was anti-national and was against other religions. The government is not giving importance to the sentiments of the majority people. Because of Tipu's deeds, Deepavali is not being celebrated in Kodagu district even now," he said.

Sunil stoutly opposed the government's effort to project Tipu as a nationalist and freedom fighter.

The media persons drew the attention of the leaders of Hindu organizations that the government has asked people not to protest against Tipu Jayanti. Chief Minister, H D Kumaraswamy, has advised people uninterested to celebrate Tipu Jayanti to stay indoors.

The leaders of Hindu organizations said that they will hold protest in this case as it relates to nationalism. They pointed out that Tipu had demolished over 8,000 temples. The organizations are yet to finalize their decision on the form and venue of holding the protest programme.

They decried Tipu Jayanti as a wrong initiative undertaken by the government to appease a section of the society. They also advised the government to stop insulting its people.

District convener of Bajrang Dal, Dinesh Mendon, Hindu Jagarana Vedike district president, Prashanth Nayak, district chief secretary of Hindu Jagarana Vedike, Prakash Kukkehalli, and Hindu Jagarana Vedike secretary, Shankar Kota, were present.

    Tippu is not a name to celebrate. However, in the name of celebration, many of our poor brothers and sisters generate some income . Why to snatch this when we are going through price rise, high cost of living etc etc. Let them celebrate Jayanthies and let people earn their bread at least for that day.

    By the way, Mysore kingdom is not belongs Tipu Sultan neither his inherited property It's actually belong's Krishnaraja Odeyar King II , Tipu's father Hyder Ali was commander in chief for King Odeyar , However he took advantage of his power and snatched the whole kingdom from Odeyar king and family by killing them by poisoning
    Secondly, Before glorifying his deeds and celebrating Tipu jayanthi , Goverment minister's should look at his sword and see what was in-scripted on the sword in Persian language " It says" My sword enlighten to kill all kafirs "

    First of all muslims are not celebrate the birthday. Secondly 1782 on Ash Wednesday Tippu attack all the churges and took 80,000 christians to Mysore and on the way 15,000 got killed and he keep others almost 8 years in jail with heavy torture.Almost 50,000 got killed in these years. Only 15,000 came back since Tiju got killed by british .....these 15,000 started again from zero......then how we can celebrate his birthday......

    I found similar information about massacre of Christians by Tipu, and other atrocities to lesser extent by his father Hyder Ali in Wikipedia and other sources.

    Being a Christian, i strongly feel, Tipu Jayanti is not worth celebrating by declaring public holiday, or govt. sanctioned festivties.

    His admirers may do so privately if they wish to do so, not because they must fear Hindus for that matter.

    Very very true Mr. Philip.. We people from our area strongly object tippu jayanthi. He even dragged young men and women of my area and murdered them...
    When he came to destroy the church, our Hindu brothers saved the church from him.. We are thankful to our Hindu families and bow our heads in respect.
    What we lost we know.. In this respect all our religious leaders should protest against Tippu Jayanthi.

    Tipu Jayanti, not going to change any vote share. Vote share shall remain as always been.

    So, why Karnataka Govt., is in favor of Tipu Jayanti and why BJP/RSS affiliated organizations are against it? Simple logic says, Congress-JDS want to spank the BJP workers who will be in street to protest. If BJP does not protest it will be like they lost their own presence. They have to protest and there is no option left. Protest means spending money, where people and resources are to be mobilized, as it has to be violent, without which there shall be no press coverage. In one go Govt achieves two objectives straight. 1. It gets BJP to spend money 2. Govt., get an opportunity to spank the guys legally who are protesting, cases will be filed etc. But, end of the day you can find only poor chaps getting beaten up, where as the anchors, stay in-doors to avoid troubles for themselves.

    Politics has its own way to deal isn't it.

    Akbar became Akbar the Great By hiding all his other side activities. Countless women were raped by his soldiers. Because of this many Rajput women committed sathi in fear of being raped by Akbar's soldiers. No. one Chela who praises Akbar was Beerbal and made him pseudo great. Tipu was fighting with British, not with an intention of making India free. He wants to create a vast Sultanate of Mysore.
    He was very selfish. I will never accept him as a freedom fighter. Thugs and Thieves who were jailed are killed by British cannot qualify as freedom fighters.

    Keeping aside Tipu Jayant protest, I would like to have clarification why Mangalore and Udupi Press club is the platform for these fanatic groups to issue a fatwa?

    Since 2015 when the Congress government started celebrating Tipu Jayanti, the BJP has been opposed to the idea and they have criticised the celebrations claiming that Tipu was a 'terrorist' and that he persecuted Kodavas and Catholics in Mangaluru. The BJP has pitted Tipu against Onake Obavva, a legendary Dalit woman who died fighting his father, Hyder Ali when he invaded the Chitradurga Fort.

    The BJP was not always opposed to these celebrations. Quoting a message from the former BJP chief minister of Karnataka Jagadish Shettar, which appeared in the book released by the Department of Kannada and Culture in 2012 titled Tipu Sultan – A Crusader for Change, the message said:

    “The modern history of Karnataka covering the period 1782-1799 is known for the significant role played by Tipu Sultan, popularly known as the tiger of the Mysore kingdom. His concept of nation State, his idea of State entrepreneurship, his advanced military skill, his zeal for reforms, etc. make him a unique leader far ahead of his age.”
    BJP's stance protesting Tipu celebrations in the state is a "political gimmick". "Tipu Jayanti existed even before 2015. It was just not a state-sponsored celebration then. There are pictures of Jagadish Shettar, Yeddyurappa, R Ashok, and other BJP leaders celebrating Tipu Jayanti. They are wearing Tipu-style turbans. They may claim that it was an Iftar party but these pictures were clicked before 2015 and they were at functions organised by the Muslim community.
    1. When BJP was in power they also conducted similar programmes. Why are they opposing now?
    2. Tipu Sultan fought British Raj is born on Indian soil. By opposing these Hindu organisations saying they are with British like its parent organisation RSS?

    I agree.. being honest Tippu was never against hindus.. he was against Christians who supported the British.. and he was against only those who supported them and not all Christians as we actually see our Aloysious college built during his time.. but he never demolished it.. I don't know y people are over reacting.. it doesn't matter whether his bday is celebrated or not.. if someone wants to celebrate I don't think there's anything wrong because he has contributed enough for our state.. we have somany tourist places today due to these Kings.. the thing is we are not open minded

    If someone wants to celebrate they should celebrate it as a party event, not as a state celebration, just like Shiv Sena & MNS in Maharashtra who celebrate Shivaji Jayanthi as their party event. People will have no objection in such case.

    The credit of re-consecration of Sharada idol made of sandalwood, the main deity at Sharada Peeta, Sringeri of Chikkamagaluru goes to ruler of Mysore Kingdom Tipu Sultan and the ruler’s contributions to the Peeta are well documented.

    Kalkuni Vittal Hegde who has researched on Sharada Peeta threw light on the history saying, “If Tipu Sultan was not there to the rescue of the Peeta, it would not have existed now.”

    Should have asked same question to PM and Rs. 3,500. - Crore could have been used for some good purpose by distributing among heavily indebted farmers or poor helpless people.
    Again why we need God Ram's statue? Proposed height is around 152 meters and Sarda Patel’s statue is 185 meters. Who is supreme? Sardar or Lord Ram?

    but tipu is a diff kind.. his killing is more from religions angle
    be it Kodavas, be it Melkote brahmins, or Manlgoare Xtians, he killed unarmed innocents with cheating and not thru battling. how can we celebrate such coward?

    Tippu killed Hindus, Muslims and Christians. He killed all those who opposed him, just like any other ruler. His biggest enemy after the British was the Nizam of Hyderabad, whose army along with the British finally defeated and killed Tippu.
    If a king/queen is defined as a freedom fighter if he/she fought against the British, then certainly Tippu also has earned that right.
