'Would you take blood-soaked napkin to friend’s home?' Smriti Irani on Sabarimala row

Mumbai, Oct 23(DC): Amid a fierce debate over lifting the centuries-old ban on women of menstruating age entering Sabarimala shrine in Kerala, Union Minister Smriti Irani said that everyone has the right to pray but not to desecrate.

“It is plain common sense. Would you take sanitary napkins soaked in menstrual blood to a friend’s home? You will not. And do you think it is respectful to do the same thing when you walk into the house of God? So that is the difference. That is my personal opinion,” Smriti Irani said at the Young Thinkers’ Conference organised in Mumbai.

"I am nobody to speak on the Supreme Court verdict as I am a serving Cabinet minister but I believe I have the right to pray, but not the right to desecrate," the Union textiles minister was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

According to a report in The Indian Express, Irani shared an anecdote when she had to wait outside a temple, with her son inside.

“I am a Hindu married to a Parsi. I have ensured that my two children practice Zoroastrianism. Both of them have done their Navjote. When I took my new-born son to a fire temple in Andheri, I had to give him at the temple gate to my husband because I was shooed away and told ‘yaha mat khade raho (Do not keep standing here)’,” she said.

“As I am not allowed to accompany my husband and children inside fire temples, I either stand on the road or wait in the car,” the minister added.

The comments evoked sharp reactions on the social media with people slamming Smriti Irani.

The Sabarimala shrine opened on October 17, for the first time after the historic Supreme Court verdict allowing women of all ages to enter the Lord Ayappa shrine. However, no woman of the banned age group was able to enter the hill-top shrine amid massive protests by priests and devotees. The temple closed on October 22.

At least 19 petitions have been filed seeking review of the top court’s judgment delivered on September 28 by a five-judge constitution bench led by former Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.

The Supreme Court has now agreed to hear those petitions on November 13.

Why did it take so long for the Prime Minister Modi government to exempt sanitary napkins from GST?

A national survey report released earlier this year said around 60% of young women aged between 16 and 24 years did not have access to sanitary pads.

The figure was as high as 80% for some of India’s poorer central and eastern states.

The BJP Modi government has pulled a 12% tax on sanitary pads for women after widespread protest. Among other things, critics pointed to the apparent contradiction of a tax on menstrual products but not on condoms. But the tax sparked protests, petitions, and lawsuits that questioned why the government would tax sanitary pads and tampons as luxury goods rather than an essential item, such as condoms, which are tax-free.

The court also pulled up the Centre for not having a single woman in the 31-member Goods and Services Tax Council.

Why is there GST on sanitary napkins when Bindi, Kajal, and Condoms are exempted?

There were no controversies for decades worshippers going to Sabarimala. Now BJP detrimental to peace in 'God's own country' into Somalia as said by Prime Minister Modi in Kerala assembly elections.

Will BJP stop using Lord Ayappa to deflect citizens of India from 'Rafale Scam' like they are using Lord Rama from decades?

Please go through Spiritual Texts and understand it before commenting on such issues. A menstruating lady only abstain from the rest of the people. Even a menstruating lady is barred touching another menstruating women.

Shrimad Ramayana says, one Minister of Emperor Dasharatha abusing Queen Kaikeyi as follows. The present confusion in Dasharatha's death is due to past wrong touch with your menstruating mom when you were menstruating. During periods, ladies must abstain from all household or office chores and take rest. She can enter house only after the periods are over. Even in vedas there are citations for it. I am deliberately not bringing vedas here because other sects or religions cannot catch up the subject in single glance. It is good to stay away from controversies that affect temple's sanctity.

It was God who made the menstrual cycle in a women and it’s not by a human being. The statement of an idiotic Minister to question "Would you take blood soaked napkin to friend’s home" may seem logical to few like-minded idiots, then is it appropriate for a person to enter his friend’s home with excreta lodged in her intestine and urine filled in her bladder? Men can have semen discharge or have sexual intercourse and enter the temple without a bath, nobody probes that and God doesn't object to it, is it? Without emptying ones bowels or with a bladder if he enters the temple is it a clean and pure entry and doesn't amount to desecration? When God as part of his creation has made it a part of a women's life cycle to undergo menstruation, can God call the women unclean? Smrithi Irani is known for her stupidity and an illiterate Minister who has half baked knowledge makes stupid comments for publicity sake. Unfortunately the BJP has such pathetic clowns in the Central Cabinet who neither have common sense nor intelligence. Let the women enter every temple irrespective of their age. It’s for God to Judge them not the Temple Priests or the Royal Family in Shabarimalai.

I'm shaking my head in absolute disbelief. We are living in the 21st century and its hard to comprehend how can a minister make such comments on woman, when she is a woman herself.

In my humble opinion Woman and man are equal in the eyes of God and no matter what people say. How will any country develop if they view half their population in such negative light.

    Composition of Menstrual Discharge
    1) Blood

    2) Endometrial fluid + tissues

    3) Cervical and vaginal mucus

    4) Vaginal microbes

There is 35% blood in menstrual discharge. The blood component in the menstrual discharge is the same as arterial blood (source: Is Period Blood Really Impure? A Scientific Take on Myths & Facts of Menstrual Discharge). Endometrial fluid and tissue come from your uterus lining, as it breaks off after failing to implant an egg. Vaginal secretions are made of water and electrolytes such as sodium and potassium (source: Menstrual Blood: it’s not what you think it is).

    Is the discharge Harmful/toxic?
Unless a woman has a blood-borne illness, menstrual fluid is harmless. No toxins are released in menstrual flow, as this is a lining that must be pure and clean enough to have nurtured a baby. Menstrual fluid is no more dangerous than regular blood (source: Menstruation: Bleeding). Your organs release many secretions in the body, and your whole body has blood inside it too. If it was toxic or harmful, you would not be alive!

Synagogues, Temples, Churches and Mosques are there for giving a person to have a peace of mind to everybody irrespective of caste, creed, colour, without gender inequality..

MAY THE HUMANS OF THIS EARTH HAVE PEACEFUL LIFE AS LONG AS THEY LIVE.

I quote from the Holy Bible:

    Matthew 9:20-22
And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

God will heals the sickness in His own time.

Can anybody imagine a sinless person on earth was touched by a diseased with an issue of blood for 12 years touched a holy man.

Why God made females to go through menstrual period? God will be displeased more with human’s hypocrisy and unclean heart than what with God's own creations. (in whatever stage they are)
Traditions, culture etc., human made and not restricted by the creator. If someone dies during certain period that means her Soul will not be permitted to enter Heaven?

Is she sitting inside her own house these days! Or not visit her office? Who made this dumb women minister? Demotion from one portfolio to another. Unless PM Modi creates a separate "Ministry for Mocking Rahul Gandhi", Smriti Irani does not deserve to be in the cabinet.

Her achievement in the last 4 years as a minster is ZERO. Fit only for mocking Rahul Gandhi on twitter and nothing else.

If persons with calibre of Ms. Irani and Mr. Ananth Kumar Hegde could be part of the cabinet, just scares me to wonder as to how could any serious national issue be ever logically resolved!!

    Saas ki Bahu,

No need to open big mouth. Remember during the time period majority women attending the office and college.....No body taking 5 days leave and they are visiting their Friends or relative's house

    But

During time of " Period" Hindu women' s are Not visiting any Temple's or Bhoota Kola or attending the wedding Rituals . To them it is " Soothaka".... And Brahmins house they are staying separately in the Rooms. Entering the Kitchen or Cooking is strictly forbidden.

By the way, people can see notice board outside temple----written
    1. Keep your footwear outside ( Leather are not allowed )
    2. Women is not allowed during the time of period ( Rajaswale yarige pravesha nishedisalagide )

Females having menstruation is a natural cycle/ course after attaining puberty and it is made by God.

Smriti Irani is asking the Supreme Court and it is a contempt of the courts ruling.

Women who are thinking blood soaked pad is bad, do not go to temple for Five days.

Come to our Churches at any time and our churches are open day and night for worshipping.

One more suggestion: menstruation will end at the most within 5 days. After that pad is not at all imperative. Why then forbidden to enter the temple after 5 days where there is no need of pads at all for few more days.

Smriti Irani is not aware of this!!!???

May be she was dating prior to her marriage after 5 days of menstruation.

She clearly doesnt know when women go to temples. She clearly doesnt know most Hindu women do not go to temples when they're menstruating i.e. for the five days when they have periods. And she doesnt know other temples do allow women to go. She wants India to be like a male dominated society? She wants India to be a classic example where women have limited rights? She doesnt want Indian women not to pray?
    She has lost her mind.
