Congress should not criticise BJP over its commitment to save girl child: Lekhi

New Delhi, Oct 22 (IANS): In the wake of Kerala Police filing a sexual abuse case against former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and others, the BJP on Monday said that the Congress should not mock at her party over its commitment to save the girl child.

"Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (save daughter, educate daughter) is a very serious campaign to protect the girl child in the country. And the government is doing its part on the campaign," Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi told reporters here.

She said that due to this campaign the cases of female foeticide in many states have come down in recent years as the government has taken up the initiative sensibly.

Slamming the Congress for making fun of the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign, Lekhi said, "The Congress and its President Rahul Gandhi should not criticize it and nor they should mock at it as the character of their party is well known to the people of the country."

Referring to former Kerala Chief Minister and other party leaders who have been named in a case of sexual abuse arising out of the solar scam, the BJP MP from New Delhi said, "The Kerala Police has registered a case against Chandy and others for sexually abusing the lady."

The BJP leader said that the CPI-M government in the state has registered a case against Chandy and a former Minister of the then UDF government in Kerala.

She also said that the cases of the sexual harassment and rapes should be handled sensitively and the political parties should not show insensitivity towards it.
