Karnataka forest dept to allot grace marks to students who grow saplings

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (EP)

Bengaluru, Oct 20: Department of Forests in the government of Karnataka has brought out a novel plan to create awareness about environment among schoolchildren. The department has offered to give grace marks to students of primary and high school, if they plant saplings and look after them.

“As destruction of environment has become a major problem and pollution is increasing every day, the government has come forward to create love of plants, trees and nature among school going children,” said minister of forests, R Shanker.

The department is contemplating about giving ten grace marks to students who plant saplings and take good care of them.

As per the proposal, an eighth standard student should plant a sapling in school, in his home premises or roadside. The department of forests will provide ten saplings such as mango, jackfruit, coconut tree etc to the student. The student should look after the sapling for three years i.e. until he or she completes tenth standard.

"The department will inspect the sapling and allot marks on the basis of its growth. It is intended to include the marks in SSLC examination marks cards," said the minister.

The department should allot land or road side with clear marking and seedling s of fruit bearing or medicinal importace enouraged.proper fencing and water provided.the class teacher is the right person to evaluate and growth of plant cannot be the responsibility of the students as it depends on many other factors.so don't punish a student for it's no fault

    This is a great initiative.

There are a few students who have learning difficulties, and struggle to pass an exam. What exactly they do sitting in their classroom whole day is beyond me. But grasping something explained by the teachers is not among them.

I am sure they will happily plant saplings all day - if those saplings can help them move forward in their school life.

    A win win for all.

I appreciate minister of forests, R Shanker unique and innovative method to connect the new generation with nature.

In Karnataka Saalumarada Thimmakka (ಸಾಲುಮರದ ತಿಮ್ಮಕ್ಕ) is the only last heard name bonded with nature. In Delhi lone entrepreneur is collecting Mango seedlings and planting to increase the green cover. Many Kannadiga doesn't know the name of S.G. Neginhal who came to Bengaluru in 1981 when the new housing layouts and urbanization were becoming a threat to the city, leaving it barren. He took on the task of filling the city with green spaces and trees. He planted over 1.5 million trees, most of them are still thriving. His wisdom and hard work transformed Bengaluru into the Garden City of India.

Inspired by the six-minute Ted Talk by founder and director of Afforestt, Bangalore-based Shubhendu Sharma in 2014, Pakistani entrepreneur built a forest in the heart of Karachi to combat the urban heat. Sharma, an industrial engineer, was inspired by the Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki’s method of afforestation. He met Miyawaki in 2008 in Bangalore, when he was working at Toyota.

In today's climate change collective effort is very much required. The school children who have a long way to go are the perfect choice for this initiation.

I would request the children's' to grow fruit-bearing trees and the last remaining native trees under the forest cover.

Not only children. The adults too should do their bit to spread the idea of growing more trees. If each one of us plants at least one sapling a year, I have no doubt in my mind that temperatures will plummet.
I have a suggestion to make. The new Bishop of Mangalore should direct all the priests of the diocese to give more attention towards planting saplings in all the Churches. Religious heads of temples as well as the Mosques should also encourage their people to grow trees.

Very good initiative. However, our government departments have short term memory, for any rally, helipad of any leader or for projects that cause pollution and global warming, them cut down few thousand trees at one go.

A fantastic groundbreaking initiative by Karnataka govt. This project will give children hands-on field experience on subject of their interest and motivate them with grace/bonus marks. This should be implemented on all subjects like science & technology, business, commerce, finance, arts, medical etc. Scope is unlimited and should be made a curriculum throughout India. Hands-on real time experience is thousand times better than teaching theoretically. This make students job-worthy as soon as they are out of schools.
