2 women return after Sabarimala head priest threatens to shut shrine

Updated:

Kerala, Oct 19(DC): Minutes away from creating history by entering the Sabarimala temple, two women, a journalist and a woman devotee, activist have decided to return after the chief priest of the shrine said he would be forced to shut the temple and walk out with the keys if the women enter.

The women, who were led by a team of police headed by IG S Sreejith, are now being escorted back and would be under police protection till they are safe back home, the senior police officer said.

According to reports, the home of one of the women in Kochi was vandalised early on Friday morning. Anticipating trouble, the journalist was made to wear riot gear, while the devotee wore a helmet along with the traditional attire for the pilgrimage.

Today is the third day after the Sabarimala temple opened its doors to the shrine for women of all ages following the Supreme Court September 28 verdict that lifted ban on entry of women between ages 10 to 50 years.

No woman has yet been able to visit the Lord Ayyappa shrine after the apex court lifted the centuries-old ban.

Devotees have blocked attempts from women of menstruating age from taking the 4.7 km walk from Pamba.

On Thursday, Suhasini Raj, who works as India correspondent for The New York Times, along with a foreign national colleague, managed to go past the Pamba gateway but was turned back mid-way by agitated devotees who formed a human wall before her.

On Thursday, Sabarimala temple chief priest had appealed to women belonging to the age group of 10-50, not to come to Sannidhanam.

Sabarimala Ayyappa temple's website explains that since Lord Ayyappa was "Nithya Brahmachari" - or celibate - women in the 10-50 age group are not allowed to enter. "Such women who try to enter Sabarimala will be prevented by authorities," the website mentions.

On September 28, a five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, headed by then Chief Justice Dipak Misra lifted the centuries-old ban on the entry of women of menstrual age into the shrine.

Earlier report:

History in the making as two women trek to Sabarimala amid heavy security

Kochi, Oct 19(India Today): With heavy security cover, two women, including a journalist, started to walk towards the Sabarimala temple in Kerala on Friday morning.

Police have formed a massive security ring around the women owing to strong resistance from the agitators who are protesting against the Supreme Court verdict that lifted a ban on entry of women of menstruating age to enter the much-frequented shrine.

The Kerala Police have deployed personnel in large numbers after the two women requested security cover to enable them to go to the Sabarimala temple.

The journalist is from Andhra Pradesh and says she wants to report from the shrine. She will however not be entering the final 18 steps as she said she is not going as a devotee. Besides this, since she has not completed the rites required to enter the shrine and hence will not see the main idol.

Meanwhile, the second woman has told police that she is going to the temple as a devotee. She is dressed in traditional attire and has performed the required rituals to enter the shrine and see the main idol.

This comes a day after a Delhi-based journalist of the New York Times tried to climb uphill to the shrine with police protection,. However, she returned midway saying she didn't want to create any controversy.

If the two women succeed in completing their uphill journey, they will become the first women from the age group previously banned to visit the Sabarimala temple of Lord Ayyappa, after the Supreme Court order permitting women of all age groups to enter the shrine.

Meanwhile, protesters have started gathering in the area and are raising slogans against the two women. They have been asserting that entry of women into the temple of Lord Ayyappa will violate their age-old custom.

Lord ayyapa is the most holiest temple in India and his devotees believe menstruating women are IMPURE.
All Holy Devotees of Lord Ayappa should accept that they R born From a women and they might have Sisters or Daughters . So according to them they all are IMPURE as they are brought up with them. So Y the So Called HOLY devotees are still staying with IMPURE girls and women of their own family.
All women upto 50 year's shouldn't nt stay with these Hindu HOLY Devotees of Lord Ayappa and Never in their lives should have sex as it will turn their HOLY Husbands and Son's devotees IMPURE.

I am of the opinion that there are thousands of Temples all over the place, why can't the public respect the tradition of Shabarimala and allow it to continue. Why create this Chaos ? For ages this tradition was going on in a nice way. Now with the interference of the SC order, very soon we will hear about incidents of immoral behavior.. People fast and stay away from sex for several days before going to the Temple. Women enter the Temple and attention will be shifted and incidents will start happening. Tradition is followed for a reason and respect it. Go to other Temples, after all Temples are all holy places meant for worshiping and devotion.

    Finally Finally ....
Who is the Lord without devotees ?
He seeks out his True Devotees and himself climbs down to meet them !
    No force required
    No legislation required
He is known as Bhaktavatsala ....This is not for anything ! The Devout know this !
It transcends over everything and is the ultimate ...You cry out and if your devotion is True then lo ! Faith can shake mountains they say.All religions are full of such stories only..How the devout and faithful prevailed ...
Those are only stories we say nowadays refusing to have faith and belief. Then you sow accordingly.
Rudolf had dwelled on the Ultimate
Tat twam Asi ..You are that . It is very difficult for it to sink in practically Rudolf and that you have brought in as a tool for argument just suggests that ....
The main or the real reason May have been - Not able to put forth an explanation of
Tradition forcefully enough. However it does not give anybody a right to sit on judgement over it.
That the Lord resides in you may take you several lives to live to understand in the truest sense. Then the saying Tat twam asi will enlighten.

The fact to be noted After all these 3 days drama is
1.No true female devotee of the Swamy has yet turned up for Darshan I.e.between the age of 10 and 50.
    2. A handful who are there are out to.Prove a Point ...
You do not Prove a Point to God.
3.Passing a verdict sitting elsewhere without assessing sentiments of crores of
Devotees, disregarding traditions, having no clue on ground realities was not the need of the hour. The Pros and Cons are now being assessed and the blame game
    has now started.
4.The administrative machinery has obviously collapsed.Major political parties do

No devote women of any caste of religion will dare to go to Shabarimala between 10 to 50.

My daughter went twice and we will have to wait for another 35years to go again. These women who are trying these dramas do not have any devotion ? Shabarimala is kept serene because of the devotion of the pilgrims who go there.

There are no facilities but still people go there only to see Lord Ayyappa and not for any other reason.

If one beleives in story of Ayyappa there is no place for women between 10 to 50 to go there. without devotion Ayyappa is just a 3 feet stone sculpture for us devotees he a deity of immense power.

Come on Guys, we all are living in the modern era with all new technologies where everyone are treated as equals. But this norm was created a long time back saying women are not allowed. According to the Constitution of India, both genders are treated as equals. So this is totally a Gender Inequality (Gender Discrimination).

I support Supreme Court decision and also its high time we change the differences of peoples thinking.

To talk about Hinduism one must be a practising Hinduism. We don’t have any gender inequality in our customs . We have some temples exclusively for men we have some temples exclusively for women and all the other temples are equally opened for everyone . We have majorly accepted every kind of reforms into our religion and belief . But, we are not liking this game of leftist and other vested interest to destroy everything about our faith. We are only faith on this planet who majoritarily believe every faith leads to god unlike many who say it’s only their way or highway . Sanathana Dharma is a union of many faiths and customs celebrating as one . As long it is respected India can be secular meddling with Hinduism beyond our limit of patience is polarising the society . One must know the very Hinduism which is practices today was rebuild from dust from 6th century . We withstood onslaught of 1000years of invasion and persecution and still we are the only living ancient culture. Many neo dharmas could not even withstand 24hrs to 50years of invasion. Culturally Hindus knows when to reform and how to reform.

In Hindu culture, out of millions of shrines and temples only few in number are dedicated exclusively either for female or male devotees. In this culture temples are not merely prayer houses but energy centres constructed as per Aagama Shashtras for a particular object. There are few temples in India where even men are not allowed to enter.
Sabarimala shrine rituals are conceived and built exclusively for men and they have to live a ascetic life during pilgrimage hence women in child bearing age group are prohibited. There is no discrimination on gender lines as females below 10 and above 50 age group are allowed.
Hence the argument menstruating women are prohibited because they are impure is not proper, the female menstruation is even celebrated and worshipped in some temples like Kamakhya Temple in Assam.

The important message given at this temple is, Tat Tvam Asi. The ultimate knowledge that each individual is a God to himself/herself. Tat Tvam Asi in Sanskrit means “That is you”. This is why the pilgrims call each other Swami.

If the above is TRUE then why all this fuss about fertile women being ǹot allowed in the temple, is it not a man-made restriction done ages ages ago maybe at that time menstruating women were thought to be impure; even today in conservative Hindu families menstruating women are not allowed inside the kitchen??

Dear friend...sati ..dowry system...deavdasi...these are 110% discrimination against women...that's why it is not followed anymore...we have corrected it and that's the beauty of this religion...

And sometimes one should use common sense...you need not go into deeper and understand it...when you enter toliets do you think too much ?..no right?
Activists behaviour is similar to that of chooseing the toilets and trying get entry to the wrong one...

There are scientific reasons behind the restrictions...there are millions of ayyappa temples and there are no such restrictions ...if this is unique and special case then one should not raise and shout discrimination...

As I said earlier real female followers of ayyappa are not trying to enter because they knew the background and sentiments...the issue here is some activists are creating disturbance in the name of gender equality...why Rehana Fathima and Mary Sweety are so curious to disturb the peace????

    Tousif,

First you compare how many temples are not allowed to women and How many mosques are not allowed to women.

When Ayyappa swamis are going to Shabarimala, they should to enter Vavar swami mosque.
So if womens are entering to that mosque is ok for you guys ?

And also one thing you need to tell us that why a muslim person filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking entry for all women to Sabaimala? why he didn't find in this in mosques ?

For you guys wearing burka is freedom for woman.

For the BJP and the RSS, Heads means Go by tradtion, Tails means they will loose all the women votes as even Maneka Gandhi has welcome the court order. A catch 22 situation for them. Having spear headed the agitation against the court order, they must display leadership with responsibility by filing a review petition in the Supreme Court.

In fact the BJP and the RSS initially welcomed the court judgement but backtracked having sensed a very low political return.

Good move by the Supreme Court, state government should ensure that this will be implemented effectively ..... women should be allowed to all temples, we made the religion, we are not made by religion....
People sitting in boards of such Temple are very much arrogant .... they are in belief of Temples are their ancestral property ......
Temple Board members & priests should be appointed by Government in a hiring process ....

Will not ask much questions as mevmyself not a religious scholar nor a my own religious fanatic . What we are askighere is why bother a tradition that's been practised and the worshipers themselves including women don't have complaint here. If there was discrimination as you suggest why young girls and those above 50vare allowed here ? These children or women are not considered in the equality inequality rights is is ?

Talking about Questions, why is Taslima Nasreen or SalmanRusdie living as a refugee in another country ? Just answer that. Which law of IPC they have broken ? Or Taslima in her country? Questioning is limited to only certain sect is it !

They were chopped, slashed etc etc coz they spoke non sense without following or understanding ABC of the Religion, their intention is not about worship but to just malign the Religion. To such best medicine is wipe out the evil.

By the way in Islam ,Women are not prohibited to enter Masjid. They can enter Masjid without any restriction except during Haiz or Nifaaq. They will have a separate prayer section to worship.

Islam says, its better for women to worship at home rather than in Masjid, as she will get the similar reward for her worship as worshiping in Masjid and her duty towards house-hold and family is considered most important and sacred.

Ab gadhon ko kya samjhaye, family kya hoti hai, house responsibility aur family responsibility kitni badi zimmedaari hoti hai ek aurat k liye.

same here in hinduism dear... we have a seperate rules or faith where it says its better for a women to pray to aiyappa at home instead of comming to the temple....if you have faith in your religion rules.. keep it with you and dont try to force your thoughts in others faith.. when it comes to your religion everything is correct... i have seen so many madrasas and mosques not allowing women who has attained puberty to enter.... so you say no this is not happening... but the reality is reality.. whatever you speak....

gadha is no us.. the entire world is pointing out at one religion who are gadhas... stop mocking at other religion beliefs.,.. the worst disrespect for women is given in your religion.. in some houses they do not have freedom to breathe as per their wish.. first correct your environment and then point out at others....

I do not see any wrong in SC judgement...
    We need good reforms..
All Hindus should be allowed to visit after confirming that people have taken bath, with clean /neat dress and hygiene...

Moreover these temple can open doors throughout the year instead of restricting entry... Come up with reforms... Society will benefit..

I think it was based on earlier report that the women will make history and then the priest did say that he would not close the shrine and later he said he would. Hence, the comment. That only made the confusion, I feel. Any way, let us watch what they will do , the day women enter.

Just because something has been followed since a really long time doesn't make it a right thing . It's sad to see that most cultures and religions consider mensturating women as Being impure . I hope these 2 women will make history today , all the best .
