Tata Group in talks for stake in debt-ridden Jet Airways

Mumbai, Oct 18: Jet Airways, which is currently undergoing financial crisis has been approached by the Tata Group, who have shown interest in purchasing a large stake in the airline. However, Tata Sons seeking full management control and role of Jet chairman Naresh Goyal could overturn the proposal, sources told media.

According to TOI’s report, the Tata Group would be interested to buy at least 26 percent in Jet Airways, which would trigger an open offer of an additional 26 percent from Jet’s shareholders.

Tata Sons which is already into the airline industry through joint ventures with Singapore Airlines which operates Vistara, and budget airline Air Asia, plans to develop their aviation business in terms of network, fleet presence and market share. A deal with Jet Airways would make this possible for Tata Group.

When government had put Air India on sale, Tata Group had considered bidding for it but finally it did not go ahead with the bid.

Meanwhile, Naresh Goyal, who along with his wife Anita owns 51% shares of Jet Airways held one round talks with buyout investor TPG, but the deal did not proceed due to differences over controlling rights.

Abu-Dhabi based carrier Etihad Airways which owns 24% in Jet had made a $35 million “cash pre-purchase payment” to Jet to improve its financials. However, if the deal with Tata progresses, it is speculated that Ethiad may sell its stake in full or atleast a part of it.

Sources say that both Jet Airways and Tata Group are keen on making discussions successful. When questioned about the deal, a Tata Sons spokesperson declined to comment while a Jet Airways spokesperson termed it ‘speculative’.

Speculations are also rife that former IndiGo president Aditya Ghosh, who is now an advisor to Tata Trust’s cancer care initiative may be asked to step-in to head Tata’s aviation business.

Jet Airways is still the best Airline in India though their on-board service has declined over the last 20 years. I hope the Tatas can save it and keep it well and alive. Nobody wants Air India as the only other alternative though Spicejet is not that bad.

Tata Sons have a known reputation for their integrity and their efficiency. They have always displayed their class of discipline in anything they touch and nurture. Their most valuable virtue is their respect for people and also the people's respect towards them. When Ratan Tata addressed the popular TV interview after the terrorist tragedy in Mumbai, he clearly indicated t the American public that he will build the destroyed Taj Hotel brick by brick, but painfully he disclosed to the public that he will not be able to replace the people who became the innocent victims of the painful tragedy.

We had no idea that Jet Airways had a debt. This is the first time we are hearing about this sad episode. Perhaps Jet Airways has invested lots of their resources towards their reputation and service.

Tata Sons are most suitable to take over the Administration of Jet Airways. Tatas have always been the successful pioneers of Airways in India anway. We wish them best of success in their future role in Jet Airways. May God bless the Tata family, always.

The Tatas are known for their upright business dealings but the same can't be said about Naresh Goyal.

    @ Josey
Be positive....Tata's are known for their trust & reputation.
If Naresh Goel agrees, then it will be a win win situation for both.
Tata's wanted to start airline business long long ago through their joint venture with Singapore Airlines in mid nineties...but due to government not giving permission then, they couldn't start.
JRD Tata himself was the pilot and Tata's contribution to airline industry in India was not recognised till date.
In fact Mumbai International Airport should have been in JRD Tata's name rather than it is renamed as "Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport"

Shivaji being a great warrior and Peshwe's of Maratha.....what is his real contribution to the Airline Industry???

I hope and trust the true business sense would prevail to materialise this deal for Jet Airways & for the Tata's.
