Indian man sacked in Saudi for misogynistic remarks amid Sabarimala temple row

Riyadh, Oct 18 (PTI): An Indian man in Saudi Arabia has been fired from his job for posting 'derogatory comments' on women, amid the Sabarimala temple row, a media report said Wednesday.

Deepak Pavithram, a Keralite working with Lulu Hypermarket in Riyadh, was sacked on Tuesday for making misogynistic and insensitive remarks about women on social media.

"We have a strict and zero tolerance policy with regard to our staff misusing social media to spread malicious or derogatory comments which might hurt religious sentiments," V Nandakumar, Chief Communications Officer at Lulu Group, told Khaleej Times.

"All GCC nations are home to a large cosmopolitan population from almost all countries in the world and we respect their sentiments, culture and religious beliefs," Nandakumar said.

Kerala expats in the Gulf took to social media to express their appreciation for Yusuff Ali M A, chairman and managing director of Lulu Group, for taking a strong step against the derogatory remarks, the report said.

This is the second termination in recent times by the Indian-owned retail giant on similar grounds.

In August, they had terminated the services of a Keralite expat in Oman after he posted distasteful comments about flood victims in Kerala.

The company took action against him even though he had apologised for the remarks the next day.

The Supreme Court on September 28 had ruled that women will be allowed entry into Sabarimala temple in Kerala.

The temple opened its door for all women visitors of all age groups for the first time on Wednesday after the historic apex court ruling last month.

Tension prevailed Wednesday morning in Kerala's Nilackal, the main gateway to Sabarimala, after the police used force to disperse protestors opposing the entry of girls and women of menstrual age into the hill shrine.

The temple would be closed on October 22 after the five-day monthly prayer during the Malayalam month of Thulam.

taking or commenting bad about a women is really wrong and they did right by hacking him from job.. but there are so many comments against the belief of hindus... the sc might have ordered anything...but at last its we hindus how we take it... 99.9% hindu women are not willing to go to shabrimale temple as its our faith and belief...and it is in not any way hurting any women... so please stop commenting against hindu belief...

i had seen many muslim men commenting against the verdict given against tripple talak... which actually is a crime against women if she has not commited any wrong.. but still people cam out with so many comments against the order of banning triple talaq.... so guys look at your self religion and thier practices... dont judge other caste culture or thier beliefs....

Well, I disagree with what you say.

Most of those employed in the Gulf, use the company paid internet connection and participate in such debates during duty hours. Sometimes, the company provides connectivity at their residence too. Using this facility to air their personal (especially derogatory) opinion is equal to misusing the facilities provided by the company, hence, the employer has the right to take action against him/her. However, if he uses his own connectivity and makes appropriate comments, if the country permits I am sure he has freedom for it.

JS mangalore,Of course an employer can do certain things against their employees.I was told that this lulu group employer is a kerala based one.So he can go against them when such comments are made from own countrymen..It is disgracing to our Nation from own country men.One has to do the work ,but not defame the employers sentiments. To defame women too in a deregatory form in social media is One has too much. One has to keep up owns dignity .and loyal to employer too.Now other employees too have to be careful.Employer must have felt bad about his employees loyality to own country.
