Protests near Sabarimala turn violent, 2 female journalists injured

Nilackal, Oct 17 (DC): Protests have intensified in Kerala hours ahead of opening of the Sabarimala temple where women of all ages will be allowed to enter the shrine for the first time.

In the latest turn of events, two women journalists one from The News Minute and the other from Republic TV were attacked by anti-women protesters when they had gone to cover the agitations near Sabarimala temple.

Reports said personnel from News 18, CNN-IBN and Aaj Taj were also targeted.

The shrine of Lord Ayyappa, traditionally closed to women of menstruating age between 10 and 50 years, opens its doors to women today after following Supreme Court verdict last month.

According to The News Minute report, the anti-women Sabarimala protesters had attacked reporter Saritha S Balan in Pamba.

The reporter was on a state transport bus that was carrying devotees to Sabarimala, when a mob of 20 men allegedly belonging to Karma Samithi surrounded the bus and tried to pull her out.

The report added that Balan was verbally abused and physically attacked. One person in the mob had kicked her on the spine.

"She was kicked from behind as angry devotees took her photograph, called her derogatory names and chanted slogans in the name of Ayyappa. A woman also tried to throw a water bottle at Saritha," The News Minute reported.

The report said Saritha, who is now at a police station, is surrounded by the goons who call themselves devotees.

In a tweet, Republic stated, "Mob of 100 smash car, attack Republic TV's South India bureau chief Pooja Prasanna". The mob of anti-women Sabarimala protesters had snatched batons from the police and attacked the television crew. Prasanna is safe.

The Supreme Court last month lifted centuries-old ban on women of menstruating age 10 to 50 years stating that they must not be barred from entering the shrine. After the verdict the doors of the temple will open today.

Lord Ayappa, the presiding deity of the temple, is considered to be celibate by the devotees.

On Wednesday morning, two women, who were among the first to begin the trek to the temple, were stopped by protesters mid-way and were forced to return by the protesters.

    Ha ha ha
You were there or born and grown here to make comments like this.
Hindu religion always respected women and it is well evident that hindus have more goddesses than gods.
Can you show any other religion having it?
Women are not totally banned from Sabarimala, but of certain age group only. Though some says menstruation is the reason, it may not be so. Without ascertaining the reasons correctly, it is better to keep away from making such irresponsibile comments.

The restriction on entry of women into the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple is a recent phenomenon. With its rich history of non-Brahmin influences.
The notion that this is a recent restriction finds resonance in the Kerala high court’s judgment. “Women used to visit the temple earlier. The Maharaja of Travancore accompanied by the Maharani (queen) and the Diwan had visited the temple in the Malayalam year of 1115 (1940). There was thus no strict prohibition for women to enter the Sabarimala temple in olden days,” the judgment read. “Both women below the age of menstruation and above the age of menstruation belong to the Sabarimala pilgrims.

According to puranic and oral traditions, Lord Ayyappa was born out of the union of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, when the latter was in Mohini form.
Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini to have destroyed a deadly demon Bhashmasur and acquire the elixir (amrut) for the gods during the great churning of oceans. Legend has it that Lord Shiva got swayed by the charm of Mohini and Lord Ayyappa was born of their union.

While Lord Ayyappa was still a minor, a lady-demon had created havoc in the down south. She had got a boon from gods that she could only be defeated by the son born out of the union of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. As it happened, Lord Ayyappa defeated her in a battle.
Upon her defeat, it was revealed that the demon was actually a beautiful young woman who had been cursed to live the life of a demon. The defeat set the woman free who, in turn, proposed to Lord Ayyappa.
He refused saying that he had been ordained to go to forest and answer the prayers of devotees. But, the young woman was persistent. So, Lord Ayyappa promised to marry her the day kanni-swamis (new devotees) stop visiting him with their prayers at Sabarimal.
When Lord Ayaapa has no problem marrying women of menstruating women, what stop BJP and RSS?
The BJP wanted to turn the 'God's own country' into another Ayodhya of the South India for political gain.

Simply illiterates. When you need women to be a part of everything in your life then why not in this holy place just like other holy places where there is no partiality for entering the place. Be it a man or a woman. Why such discriminations by common people when the court has judged already?

"YOU NEED A WOMAN TO BE YOUR LIFE PARTNER. FOR PLEASURE. TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR CHILD. TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PARENTS. TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR WHOLE OF YOU, THEN WHY THIS NARROW MINDED BEHAVIOUR THAT TOO AT A HOLY PLACE"

Grow up guys. India cannot stay at the same place still and still called developing nation for another 100+ years. Pls grow up. Be open minded.

What sort of religion is this if children and women are not allowed to enter the temple.

Religion has reached a disgusting level as we all know that men are born from women and these men don't allow women to enter the temple. Even Lord Ayappa being a bachelor was born through a woman.

We have not seen god and we don't know whether he really exists but surely we now know that Lord Ayappa has become the personal property of men and these men care a damn or don't even respect women. I think Lord Ayappa will not like this.

Do not pass comments without knowing the facts. Restrictions to women is specifical to this particular temple. There are many Ayyappa temples where women are allowed. It's an age old tradition and it has to do with the diety installations and other factors. Court cannot rule on this matter. Sanatana dharma is not against women, in fact there many Goddesses worshipped. Can anyone answer why there are no women Bishop, father or POPE? Does that mean it's discrimination is gender?
Unfortunately, in Kerala the non believers are governing the temples.

It is above politics and above religion and it has in its wisdom studied the case in depth and has decided that the temple should be open to both sexes. This judgement should therefore be respected by all. Why is the BJP which has taken the agency and the right for issuing certificates of patriotism and nationalism now agitating against the judgement of the Supreme court of the Republic of India? What patriotism and nationalism is this?
