Mumbai, Oct 17: “Prison should not be a place of punishment to prisoners who go there after court sentence. Our aim is that it should be a place of conversion for them. They should not be afraid of police officials and staff and be aware of human rights. Police should be humane with prisoners. Prisoners should not be punished in prisons. Crime should be condemned but not criminals,” said Karnataka state ADGP N S Megharik.

He was speaking at a symposium 'Rangabhoomiyinda Samaja Sudharane' (improvement of society by dramatics) held at Bhavudaji Road, Mysore Association auditorium as part of a country festival on Sunday evening October 14.

Nagpur district IGP K M M Prasanna, retired inspector general of police Gopal Hosur, Karnataka Natak Academy former president Srinivas G Kannappa and Mysore Association president Kamala Kantaraj took part in the symposium.

Gopala Hosur said that experiments such as these to reduce pressure on prisoners are commendable. “The plan is fruitful. A person comes out from mental tension and problems when he involves in multiple activities. We support the wonderful efforts by Kattimani.”

Earlier Dr Shamala Prakash and Shamala Radesh group presented a musical programme. A documentary 'Samaja Sudharane' was shown. Prisoners in Mysuru prison staged 'Sangya Balya' janapada drama.

Mysore Association's K Manjunath, manager B K Madhusoodan and others were present. Dr B R Manjunath welcomed and gave the keynote address. Association secretary Dr Ganapathi Shankeralinga proposed the vote of thanks.
