Viral Video : Catholic priest dances with cassock at traditional garba, steals hearts

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai (MS)

Mumbai, Oct 16: In a unique show of religious harmony, a Catholic priest stole the show at the traditional garba dance that was held at the Don Bosco grounds in Matunga in the city on Sunday, October 14. The priest who swayed his cassock to the tunes of garba song is none other than the rector of the school, Fr Crispino D'Souza.

'Dandiya Dhamaka', a nine-day all faith garba dance festival was organized by the shrine of Don Bosco Matunga. The video of rector Fr D'Souza dancing on the floor has gone viral on social sites and many people including Christians have lauded his gesture, an attempt to gel well with people of other communities.

A similar event is also held at St Peter's Church Bandra on all the nine days of the Navaratri.

Godfrey Pimenta, member, Bombay Catholic Sabha (BCS), who was ecstatic after watching the act of Fr D'Souza, said, “It is a good gesture on the part of the priest in fostering new relationships with our brethren from other communities.”

Fr D'Souza was not available for his comments on the act.

Fr Frazer Mascarenhas SJ, parish priest, St Peter’s Church, said, “Our church has been making attempts to build bridges of understanding and collaboration with people of other faiths living within our parish area – with the guidance of a committee comprising members of other faiths.”

Fr Mascarenhas, who is also one of the organizers of the Bandra event, said the multi-faith committee had decided to hold a cultural festival to bring together people from all faiths on the occasion of Navaratri. “We decided to hold a Dandiya dance and an inter-cultural food festival. The social outreach cell of the parish, which trains differently-abled children every Sunday, also proposed a Dandiya dance. The two proposals merged into the holding of the Dandiya Dhamaka – a purely cultural festival, learning the movements of the Dandiya and the garba."

"There was no religious colour to the event, except that this is an effort to overcome evil with goodness, disharmony with harmony and collaboration – which is the theme of the Navaratri festival – a theme that is also very close to the heart of every Christian," he added.

In his praise of the rector, Dolphy D’Souza, former president, Bombay Catholic Sabha, said, "Fr D’Souza has shown wonderful, inter-religious harmony in his act, that too with the cassock. His dance was very good. He is far ahead of the times. I thank him for leading people from the front."

He added that St Peter’s parish believes “the building up of the kingdom of God cannot avoid borrowing the elements of human cultures” – as stated clearly by Pope Paul VI’s 1975 document, ‘Evangelii Nuntiandi’.

“This dance included 450 people from different religious faiths, including differently -abled children and their families, who got together to celebrate this shared heritage. Cultural celebrations of this nature are indeed useful in doing away with the stereotype prejudices as the harmony and fellowship experienced by all the participants of this event was evident. Events of this nature also help in building unity and collaboration among the varied peoples of our country,” Fr Mascarenhas said.

Bandra resident Anil Joseph, said “Scores of our non-Catholic brethren visit Bandra’s famous Mount Mary’s Church feast and fair to celebrate the nativity of Birth of Virgin Mary in September. Similarly, Christmas and its ensuing celebrations are organised by many commercial outlets in Bandra, and people of all faiths enjoy them. So drawing a parallel, this initiative was taken by the churches’ multi-faith committee and social outreach cell to have a Dandiya dance event for people of all faiths to mingle and enjoy each other’s traditions should be viewed in the same vein,”

I completely agree with people who think this was no big deal. After all he is a human being first and a priest after that. His vocation does not stop him from dancing and he has been dancing gracefully without any vulgarity .
It is a simple line dance and he is not touching any women or men for that matter. People who have criticizing him based on his steps and that he has practiced this before ? get a life. It’s a simple 4 step line dance and am sorry but if u cannot master this without practicing, then I think you have 2 left feet. This priest is not violating any rules. If pope Francis had to comment I am sure he would have only said “ WHO ARE WE TO JUDGE”.
Are you (the ones passing negative comments) perfect humans ? do you lead lives that are perfect ? not that I find any imperfections in this priest BUT I seriously think people need to think outside the square and think like our new Pope.

Dear Fr Crispin, please do not fall for any of the negative comments online. As long as you are a good priest and doing your job well which is servicing the ministry of the LORD , you should have nothing to worry.
Some people have a problem with everything .

It’s not the question of dancing... it is a question of what message the community will get... especially the youngsters from the Christian community...

The only message out of this is priests now are going and involving themselves in the practices that are used to please idols... organizing a 9 day festival during navratri, shows that christians are ok worshipping idols as well...

He could have organized a cultural dance festival any other time and probably also participated without his cassock on... he can’t just play with the dignity of the cassock.

If he has taken the promise and responsibility to honour the church traditions, he has to be mindful of what he portrays outside... as others get the wrong message...

As St Paul’said, those who cause others to fall into sin.....

I don't think Fr Crispin was looking for all this publicity that he got, both positive from the majority and negative from a few sick minded souls, who only see negativity in everything. He just did what his conscience said was right. I do not think at that moment he thought he was a Christian and that garba was a Hindu custom. This is a festival of unity, gaiety and love and he whole heartedly participated in it. It must have given him immense pleasure to participate as it did to all the others who also danced and participated and the millions who watched the video. Hope more and more such inter religious events are organized and celebrated by all. Such events will help erase the divisions, hatred and negativity that exists in our country.

If the majority of readers who agree with what priest did was right, why can’t you people ask the nuns too to join the event next year?

Then what is the difference between people of religious order and lay man. There should be some reservation when people of religious order are concerned. They should be bound by religious principles and not to pick any choice of their personal wish. Let them demand for their right to get married too. Change is always better.

At least the Priest is not hypocrite. He likes to dance and let him dance. There is nothing wrong with it. King David, a religious head dancing is mentioned in the bible. Priest's dance is a sign of civilization. A few years back, I danced with a Nun in one of the community events in the USA. It was just like dancing with my sister.

Ask your parents or grandparents how big is the millstone. There are no toy millstones.
Abortion is killing and is murder of unborn, but conceived one.,and there is no excuse left or right.
In law, if a person kills a pregnant woman, it is considered as double murder, but abortion is not considered as murder in our society, or the law takes it for granted, chaltha hai?.
What kind of law is this?

Bible says clearly listen to what the Pharisees say but dont act according to what they do.
    Same holds good for priests.
No all priests are good. Some are really rotten bad.
We are not going to give account of what they do to the final judge, but our own.
There are some priests even bishops who act wrongly. Some of these even dilute the teachings of Jesus,
specially about homosexuality, mortal sin including adultery, abortion and divorce.
A trivial situation is who will bear the responsibility of the condemnation and damnation of fire, owing to the wrongful teaching given by priests and bishops.

Hinduism is all aobut enjoying life fully
We don't sit in a serious pose with god,
    We sing praising the deity
We dance , esp when it comes to Krishna or Durga
We laugh, we cry, we are allowed to show our emotions.
We also make light fun of the god, be it Ganesh tummy or Krishna's flirting.
But we also clarly know what is fun and what is abuse. we don't abuse
