Bengaluru, Oct 16: Henceforth, all the government hospitals in the state will offer 58 types of disease diagnosis tests free of cost. The facility, which was hitherto available only for families living below poverty line (BPL), has been extended to cover all classes of people under National Health Mission.

Until now, some tests were extended to members of BPL families free of cost in district hospitals. For some other tests, 50 percent of the charges were to be paid. Under the free diagnostic tests scheme introduced under the mission during the year 2018-19, all classes of people will get free diagnostic tests. State health department has issued instructions accordingly.

Costly tests like MRI, CT scan, thyroid tests, ECG, Echo cardiac test, liver, kidney function tests, x-ray, blood group tests, urine, malaria, dengue, ultrasound, cholesterol tests and all the 58 tests available in government hospitals will be covered under this programme.

Dr Bhanumurthy of K C General Hospital here said that his hospital has been extending this free facility with effect from October 8.

Health officials must understand that deadly disease, cancer, has become as common as flu these days. Please include Chemo, Radiation or other related tests too because the lower class are more affected due to tobacco consumption and smoking. Currently primary tests such as mammography or pap-smear are much beyond reach to common people.
