Mangaluru among five centres chosen to house rapid action force

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 8: The central government has decided to set up rapid action force (RAF) units in five new places in the country. Mangaluru has emerged as one of the preferred choices for this distinguished recognition. This happens to be the first ever RAF base to be set up in Karnataka.

RAF happens to be a part of the Central Reserve Police Force. Currently, they are present in Hyderabad, Allahabad, Ahmadabad, New Delhi, Mumbai, Aligarh, Jamshedpur, Coimbatore, Bhopal and Meerut.

The other bases selected by the central government this time are Varanasi, Jaipur, Hajipur in Bihar, and Nuh in Haryana. Although the union government had given its clearance for the creation of five new RAF battalions in the country during January this year, it has now announced the names of places where they would be set up. With these five, the country will have a total of 15 RAF bases.

With RAF bases at Meerut, Allahabad, Aligarh and now Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh with four bases, will be having the highest number of these bases.

The major functions of RAF are to regulate violence and mob rioting. The forces have unique uniform and are specially trained in handling violence and mass trouble. RAF battalions also work along with other forces on humanitarian grounds to tackle situations like earthquake, flood, cyclone and natural calamities. They are equipped by instruments needed to handle large scale violence like pump action guns and smoke grenades etc.

City police commissioner, T R Suresh, said that land for housing RAF office had been identified in Maravoor and Bajpe in the city when submitting proposal two years back. He stated that the commissionerate has not received any information about the above decision, as the negotiations and discussions were held at the government level.

Mangalore was one of the peaceful cities in the past. However the present situation is anything but satisfactory. Hope the RAPID ACTION FORCE will benefit the city to maintain peace and harmony. I have a question here. Will the R.A.F. working under the direction of The Police Commissioner?

I don't understand why few are resisting the presence of base for RAF. Mangalore has large Industries like MRPL, MCF, Major Sea and Air Port . Their presence may ease security concerns for these vital Institutions too. Why is Modi dragged in every issues? Is Modi only for Mangalore or the whole Nation?

Mangalore being on west coast is a sensitive place from security point of view especially considering earlier Mumbai attack. Also we have large oil refinery, strategic oil reserve and sea bird installation (at Karwar).

Let us welcome the decision rather than giving our views for which we are not knowledgeable enough on National security matters

RAF is a welcome decision, but fact is why a central force that has a lot of North Indians. Central govt is the remote to control riots using RAF. I do not know about state or nearest administration will be in charge of RAF. Who knows this will be ready within 2-6 months in Mangaluru... elections are nearby BJP wants Modi to contest from coastal region..maybe losing seat in Varanasi ...conspiracy theory is he will be wanting to win from here hook or crook and wants a army ready to tackle issues.

The previous and current state Congress Govt appeasement tactics have taken a huge toll. We have lots of 'sensitive areas' around and you dont have to be an Einstien to figure out why? Due to the excessive Govt pampering on religious grounds, Mlore has become a safe haven for sleepers cells. Criminals from Kerala and other states hide in Mlore after committing a crime. Logistics are provided by locals on the basis of religion. Mlore is now on the radar. You cannot blame God and Modi all the time.

People who will be residing in nearby areas of this RAF or any other force will be on the receiving end.

These thugs when they are free create lot of trouble to locals.

Few years ago people of Baikampady have seen the real picture of the same kind of force which was later shifted after rucks with locals.

Hope the administration keeps an eye once their accomodation is made permanent and these guys arrive in groups
