Udupi: SP resorting to lathi-charge against Congress workers condemnable – Pramod Madhwaraj

Udupi, Sep 10: “Congress leaders and activists were protesting peacefully. They were requesting shop keepers. But BJP activists, holding the their party flags, interrupted our protests and urged to open closed shops. Police unnecessarily resorted to lathi charge. District in-charge minister Dr Jayamala and home minister will be informed about it,” said former Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj.

He was responding to reporters about Bharath bandh.

“What was the need for BJP protests in front of SP’s office? People of Udupi had responded excellently. There was no forced bandh anywhere. When bandh was in progress, opposition party members holding party flags intervened in some places and expressed their opposition. BJP has disrupted peaceful protests in the past also. We have never interrupted their protests,” he added.

“District SP personally lathi charging on congress activists is condemnable. Police violence against Congress city councilor Ramesh Kanchan, Vijaya Poojary and activist R K Ramesh is condemnable. How can police who needed to remain calm in such grim situations lose patience?” he asked.

“There should be investigations about police excesses. There should also be investigations if Congress party has forced for bandh,” he said.

To protest against price-hike is not wrong.

But, i have no doubt in my mind that the state govt used the state machinery to enforce the bandh(supported by it) and that is wrong, it is in contempt of Court.

This Bandh(as most others) had little to do with caring for the ordinary citizen, it was done by political parties to score brownie points against their opponents at the cost of the ordinary citizen. i don't care whether it is the Congress this time or the BJP the last time, they are 2 sides of the same coin.

the press & Whatsapp were quoting DC's of both DK & Udupi issuing contradictory statements in the press. Why was a holiday announced for schools & colleges. Whose duty was it to ensure that normal life was not affected! If the DC's were worried about L&O they should have called out the Army.

The State has violated Supreme Court orders and hence is party to an illegality.

If the SP of Udupi has done the right thing as per standard operating procedures(lathi –charge is among the last resorts) and has performed his duty in an unbiased manner, I stand by him and salute him; whether he lathi-charged Congress workers or BJP is immaterial( i repeat this should have been only used as among the last resorts). Bravo Mr.Nimbargi!

At least he had the spine which other IAS & IPS officers, who are constitutionally protected, did not show. Perhaps, he may be transferred for hitting the minions of the party in power in the state(does not matter who they are). At least he has bravely led from the front and should be respected for not doing it behind someone's back(like our greedy politicians displaced from power). If his superiors in the Police Establishment find he was right , I hope they will show the spine to stand up for him.

It is the duty of the parties calling for a Bandh to ensure that no untoward incident occurs, the onus is totally on them and they should be hauled up.
Nobody has any right to go and even request, let alone force, a shop-keeper to shut down!

There should be peaceful bundh and not violent one. When things get violent, police had to resort to lathi charge and there is no option. Who gave you rights to trouble people and cause loss to the public?

Politics based on religion or business is condemnable in democracy. Grouping people on the basis of food habits is present day politics. Everybody has right to live but some have more that is imagination of few which leads to this condition. People in Politics need broad mind and proper education to conquer the world.

In entire India, only people in coastal Karnataka have showed more interest in Bandh and opposing Bandh. We were once best known for good education, unity, peace, culture and Intelligence. But by seeing today's youth, I really doubt if we can carry forward our legacy.
