WhatsApp officially rolls out forward message limit for Indian users

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS) : With the Indian government talking tough on WhatsApp's failure to check the spread of fake and provocative content on its platorm, the instant messaging service on Wednesday said it has begun rolling out its forward message limit to five chats for over 200 million users in India.

The Facebook-owned platform last month announced to launch a test to limit message forwarding to five chats in India.

"The limit has started to appear this week for people in India who are on the current version of WhatsApp," the company said in a statement on Wednesday.

In addition, the instant messasing app also published a new video to educate its users, saying it is expanding its user education campaign on how to spot fake news and hoaxes.

"This week, WhatsApp is publishing a new video that explains the importance of the 'forward' label and calls users to 'double check the facts when you're not sure who created the original message,'" said the company.

People forward more messages, photos, and videos in India than any other country in the world.

Globally, the company allows users to forward messages for up to 20 chats (either individuals or groups).

WhatsApp said that with new changes, which it will continue to evaluate, "will help keep WhatsApp the way it was designed to be: a private messaging app".

"We are deeply committed to your safety and privacy which is why WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted, and we'll continue to improve our app with features like this one," it said in an earlier statement.

Media reports surfaced this week, claiming the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had asked telecom companies for ways to block social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and Instagram in case of threat to national security and public order.

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), however, said the government should look for "more effective" steps to curb fake news and maintain public order, instead of blocking mobile applications.

I have a better idea , why not water mark the photo with IP and time stamp from the originators device. For videos time stamp can be embedded as a meta data. Anyways one good thing with all this gammut is that during the coming elections we will have very less fake news forwards. O noticed that already the fake forwards have gone down in number.

As per data compiled by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 45 persons were killed in 40 cases of mob lynching across nine states between 2014 and 3 March, 2018.

CSSS found based on the reporting of these newspapers that since January 2014 to 31st July 2018, 109 incidents of mob lynching have taken place in India. These 109 incidents include bovine related vigilantism, “love jihad” vigilantism, vigilantism around the rumours of child lifting, violence related to identity markers like skull caps and also forced to chant Hindu supremacist slogans. Out of the 109 incidents, 22 incidents took place in Maharashtra, followed by Uttar Pradesh (19) and Jharkhand (10) . All the three states are BJP ruled states.

This social media platform of WhatsApp action is too little and too late. This social media platform don't region office in India is not going to be accountable unless central government draft new law similar to Germany with hefty fines and blockade .

Ironically, ours is the only nation in the world Prime Minister follows the troll who issue rape threat, murder, abuse and still tag by the followers 'proud to be followed by PM Narendra Modi'.

There could even be around 20,000 people who work for the BJP IT cell from all parts of the country. If one does simple multiplication this five messages can even prove disaster for our nation. In this nation cost of influencing elections is cheap is what I thought. Political parties are using underpaid and overworked youths in large numbers to screw their own future.

This is the reality of the 'Digital India' beyond control.

Why limit only 5 msg forward!?. They should completely ban msg forward!!!!. I am surprised government instead of taking tough measures on perpetrators is blaming social media which was the basis of their own success!!!!. Why only BJP ruled states are famous for lynchings!?. Why not ban BJP or limit BJP only to few seats in each state!!!???

The government itself is encouraging its IT cell to publish fake news and divide the people on the basis of religion to get vote from majority. The government failed to provide jobs to youth as promised, failed to bring black money as promised, failed in almost all fields, the only way left is to divide the people, create fear, and tell them that if you give vote we will protect you.
