The deceased were Vijayanand Suresh Naik (28) from Karwar, and his friend, Santosh Laxman Guruva (27), resident of Halaga, Khanapur taluk, Belagavi district.

The BSF contingent was at its camp at Marbida. As soon as they came to know about the movement of naxals at Tadabul seven kilometres away, the soldiers left for that place in motor bikes. After a landmine went off when the motor bike of Vijayanand and Santosh was moving over it, both suffered serious injuries.
