Bengaluru: 'Mathru Poorna' scheme - pregnant women refuse to eat food cooked by Dalits

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Jul 9: 'Mathru Poorna' scheme, which was brought into action by the former Siddaramaiah government, for the benefit of pregnant women and new mothers has received a setback in many districts of the state including Bengaluru rural, Ramanagara, Mandya and Hassan as pregnant women and new mothers are refusing to visit the Anganwady centres for food for the sole reason that the food is being cooked by Dalits and lower caste women.

The former government had brought this scheme in order to provide nutritious food to pregnant women and new mothers so that they can be disease free. The responsibility of bringing the pregnant women and new mothers to the Anganwady centres was given to Asha activists. In the beginning, when this scheme was introduced, there was a very good response. However, gradually there was a decline in numbers.

According to a senior officer of the Women and Child Development department, apart from the cooking of food by the Dalits and lower caste people, certain superstitions like pregnant women should not go out of the house lest evil eyes will be cast on them and they are not supposed to pass in front of men in the village are also contributing to the setback of this scheme.

Activists of 'Asha' are doing the work of creating awareness among the village folk to wipe out these disbeliefs. However, the pregnant women and new mothers, who visit the Anganwady once are not turning for the second time due to the objection put forth by the elder members of their families.

"Most of the time it is difficult for pregnant women and new mothers to cook food. That is why nutritious ready food is available in Anganwady centres. There will be good improvement in the health of child and mother also. People should come out of the disbeliefs and make use of the scheme," says Dr R N Lakshmipati, officer of Child Health and Family Welfare department.

I'm a MANGALOREAN DALIT atheist. And I was lucky that I was born in a place like Mangalore. Also, I would choose anything other than Hinduism because for me it's weak and confusing (The caste system). And i wouldn't want to deal with these misinformed "upper" caste people.

When you say you r an "atheist "That means you don't have any cast /religion. So no need or can't say you r a dalit. Further "upper cast" is a relative term and not an absolute term .as a lower or upper cast depends upon with cast of that person with whom he compares

What business you have to talk about Hinduism. Are you following Hinduism. First clean up the mess in your own religion.

As far as I know, the Hindus are good people except the fringe groups who have spread division. This type of fringe groups are in all religion.
No one case eradicate caste/tribal system but reduce to a great extent by empowering, educating the less priviledged, downtrodden people irrespective of religion.

Hinduism is a religion which accepts constant change to need of the society. Hinduism is not rigid, does not follow a book written by a person thousands of years back. There are few things to change in our society, we are ready for it. This caste minance will go, we can see this has started in udupi and DK.

People you are in the 21st century. Get rid of those blind beliefs. Govt has done its bit, now it your turn to make the scheme a success. Until the food is hygienic and nutritious there should not be any problem in having it.

With these superstitions and caste ,Dalites, etc, our India will never develope even after some decades of independence.Only when educated people go out of houses ,to foreign countries ,there is a chance to develope slowly .WHy does these people believe, when food is cooked by "Dalits and lower caste women"is cooked not with water ?does these higher caste ones when they have no food to eat and suffer themselves and their notborn child suffers?what when they employ a "lower caste "woman at home do they also not eat?God ,they really should be given a thorough brain wash.Best is let them come and prepare food themselves.so they can eat and give to others who are high Brahmins .why dont they do it?

Who told you that the women refused to eat r brahmin? Don't comment till you know the whole details of the case. Do you know so called dalits of "edgai" are not mingling with "balgai" dalits. So no need to comment on brahmin in this report. Further don't you know there is so called cast system in Christians too. Don't pretend like "ostrich"

This is really bad for India. In 21st century we are practicing untouchability. Do these women check who has packed biscuits in a factory or for any ready made foods or cold drinks. I am really scared of this kind of discrimination. Ours is the country which kept close to 20% of the population into such kind of dscrimination. Neither muslim rule not christain rule could eliminate that . We as a modern society with great culture of more than 5000 years should strive hard to eliminate

This apathy is unwarranted in this age.
If they do not want to eat let them go anywhere else.
    There are no dalits anymore.
We are all children of God.
Please go and eat for your baby in stomach.
    God will bless you abundantly.
