Swachh Survekshan - Mangaluru adjudged India's best city in solid waste management

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (DC)

Mangaluru, May 17: Mangaluru has been adjudged as India's best city in solid waste management with a population of 3-10 lacs by the ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) while announcing results of Swachh Survekshan-2018 on Wednesday May 16.

The assessment is done under the aegis of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban).

In the list of winners, Mysuru was adjudged as India’s cleanest medium city with a population of 3-10 lacs. The best city tag in solid waste management (SWM) in south zone with a population of less than 1 lac has been bagged by Hunsur.

The Swachh Survekshan-2018 assessment was done in 4,203 urban local bodies. An on-field survey was conducted by independent agency appointed by the MoHUA. The data for ranking of cities was collected from three sources including service level progress, direct observation and citizen’s feedback.

The agency also collected citizen's feedback directly and performance of the Swachchata App was also monitored. Cities with population of less than 1 lac were ranked at zonal level and the cities with population of 1 lac and more were ranked at national level

The ministry informed that based on performance in Swachh Survekshan-2018, awards will be conferred to 29 cities/cantonment boards at the national level, 20 cities at the zonal level and 3 states having the best performance in urban areas.

You have mixed up 'cleanliness' with 'Solid Waste Management'.

Solid Waste Management refers to collecting the solid waste from households in a planned manner and disposing it appropriately. This requires a lot of hard work and skills, as demonstrated by Mr Lobo.

    Dear Vishwanath, Kolya/Mangalore / Dubai,

I understand that the task of constructing over bridges along the Highways is of the central government. It is the highways authority of India which executes and oversees this work. I think it is improper to blame the local MLA for the delay in such works. Let's be fair in passing unfounded comments. Know that truth is truth. God bless India. God bless Karnataka.

Lets not give only credit to politicians, lets pat our own back its bcz we as Mangalorean citizen kept our city clean & not to forget Swach mission Bharat conducted by Ramakrishna Ashram, Yes there are still scope of improvement, but this is something good for Mangalorean's .

I m being a Hindu i always feel its Catholic community who are always on upper hand when it comes to cleanliness, i always observe that they keep their surrounding clean and planting trees at their residence , few places which i remember at this movement , Kadri, Bejai, Valencia, Shaktinagr & Kulshekhar, double gate, Gerosa Road.

    Jai Tulunadu.

Mangaluru should target to become Cleanest city in Zonal level and then finally in National level..

Because of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and it's policy of Naming and Shaming unhygienic cities.. hope India will become clean in next 10 years...

Opposition parties and Media in the lower ranked cities will make sure that they become Cleaner.

    Dear Robin,

With all due respect to your un biased comments - what you are trying to imply is that a candidate or a MLA per se should not do good work if he or she is not in the "RIGHT" party.

You must be kidding me. JR Lobo had a beautiful vision for Mangalore which unfortunately dubious games and dirty politics played by the RIGHT party meant that he would not be able to realize this vision. We as citizens get swayed by politics of caste and creed instead of focusing on the matters that count, development, stability and peace for your area and its surroundings.

It is very sad to note that both our districts have not considered these basic points but instead swayed towards tall claims and talk by so called National leaders of the RIGHT party - what you do not understand is that the NATIONAL leaders play a limited or no role in the functioning and development of the constituency (Classic examples are our elected MP's from the twin districts who are representatives of the RIGHT party and have done little other create communal tension among us peace loving Mangalorean's)

End of the Day it isn't about being part of the RIGHT party it is all about doing the RIGHT thing for your constituency which unfortunately we as citizens have just made a WRONG decision.

    Jai Hind!
