Bengaluru: It's official - Yeddyurappa to take oath as CM, gets 15 days to prove majority

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Updated

Bengaluru, May 16: The high drama surrounding the formation of the new Karnataka government reached its climax on Wednesday May 16 evening, with governor Vajubhai Vala inviting the BJP to form the government.

BJP with 104 seats in the assembly is the single largest party. Soon after the election results were declared on Tuesday May 15, the Congress and the JD(S) decided to join hands and claim stake to the government.

On Wednesday evening, after intense day-long drama, the governor invited BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa to take oath as the new chief minister of Karnataka.

Yeddyurappa will be sworn-in as the CM on Thursday May 17 at 9 am.

The governor has given the BJP 15 days to prove its majority in a floor test in the assembly.

The governor took the decision after consulting with former Attorney General Mukul Rohtagi, who favoured inviting the single largest party first, in this case the BJP, media reports said.

BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai told reporters, "The governor has invited B S Yeddyurappa to form government. Official communication has been received. The governor has given 15 days to prove majority and oath will take place at 9 am tomorrow (Thursday)."

The BJP on its official Twitter account tweeted, "The moment that crores of Kannadigas are awaiting is here. Sri @BSYBJP will take oath as Chief Minister of Karnataka tomorrow morning at 9.00 AM at Raj Bhavan. The movement to build our Suvarna Karnataka has started."

The BJP had earlier tweeted about the governor's invitation and deleted the tweet within minutes. After getting the governor's letter of invitation, the BJP posted the same tweet again, with a change in the time.

Even before the announcement was officially made, BJP leaders said that the governor had already invited their party to form the government. BJP MLA Suresh Kumar in a tweet, said, "B S Yeddyurappa will be sworn in as Chief Minister of the state at Raj Bhavan tomorrow at 9:30 am on Thursday." He further urged people to join and participate in the event. Suresh Kumar too deleted his tweet later.

The Congress termed as 'shocking' the Karnataka BJP's claim that B S Yeddyurappa would be sworn in as CM, and said it would be tantamount to 'murdering' democracy, 'trampling' Constitution and disregarding all the precedents.

Objecting to the governor's decision, Congress leader P Chidambaram in a press conference in New Delhi said that the governor should not 'act illegally' and is bound by the Constitution and the Supreme Court judgement that states that the single largest party without the required numbers cannot form the government. Chidambaram said that the Congress-JD(S) combine has the majority.

"What is standing in way of the governor from extending invitation to leader of the alliance (H D Kumaraswamy), who clearly demonstrated that he commands the support of the majority," Chidambaram asked.

"The governor holds an exalted constitutional office, he shouldn't walk on a perilous path which is illegal. He's bound by Supreme Court judgement, bound to invite leader of alliance which is presented to him as an alliance that commands maturity of members in legislative assembly," P Chidambaram added.

The JD(S) meanwhile alleged that the BJP had 'poached' the governor as well. The party termed it as a 'black day for democracy'.

PM & BJP President have sanctioned ‘encounter of the Constitution’ at the hands of Governor of Karnataka today. Vajubhai Vala acts as a puppet serving his masters’ in BJP rather then serving the Constitution.

BJP has launched ‘Operation Kamal’ from Karnataka Raj Bhavan by trashing our sacrosanct Constitution & murdering democracy. Tomorrow, an illegitimate & immoral Govt will take oath, sanctioned by law & in violation of the Constitutional norms/precedents.

BJP has 104 seats, how will they prove majority on floor, even if they get some independent MLAs?Only way out is to bring Cong & JD(S) MLAs with them, either by using muscle power or buying MLAs.

Governor Vala’s generosity to allow Yeddyurappa 15 days to prove majority is a licence to purchase MLAs from the Congress and the JDS in order to ensure the majority. JDS Chief HD Kumaraswamy had alleged on Wednesday that the BJP was wooing their MLAs with Rs 100 crore each.

In Hung House, Who Says BJP Man Vajubhai Won’t Help Party Again? From Goa to Manipur, Modi's Governors Have Sabotaged Democracy
Modi wants to conquer India by hook or by crook. His governors are his co-conspirators. He has put the constitution on a slippery slope.Today he has proved his loyalty to the RSS.

But 2 failures ..ie cong and JD coming together through a post poll alliance is as sinister ploy.
I would agree if they were in a pre poll alliance ..but this is like 2 students coming together and claiming to have passed with combined marks ...while one has managed to get distinction on his own ...

    My friend,

Governors of each state are nothing but puppets of the party in power at the Centre. Indira Gandhi started the trend in the 70’s. Then Rajiv Gandhi, V P Singh, Narsimha Rao, Vajpayee, DEVE GOWDA, MMS and now Namo are merely carrying forward that tradition. [I have included Vajpayee because Modi should have been dismissed in 2002 which did not happen; and I have included Deve Gowda because Vajubhai Vala was at the receiving end of his puppet Governor].

Personally, I think our constitution should abolish the Office of a Governor and transfer his functions to the Rashtrapathy Bhavan. The Presidential office would deal with these matters in a much more professional manner and has much better access for constitutional consultations. But this is a matter for discussion on another day.

None of the two alternatives facing us in Karnataka is anything to be rejoiced. On the one side BJP has to certainly engage in unethical practices to break the INC+JDS combo; And on the other side Congress wants to thrust Kumarswamy as the CM, when people of Karnataka have clearly REJECTED his party. JDS has absolutely no MLAs outside the cauvery river basin. What moral or legal authority does Kumarswamy have to lead Karnataka?

So, my friend, let Shah, Azad and Gowdas play their cards. Let Arnab keep barking. I am opening a bottle of Johnny Walker and get nostalgic about the clean politics of good old days of Ram Krishna Hegde and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

We must appreciate the leadership skills and command that Amith Shah is having. This time the entire BJP state unit was under control of central leadership. BSY had no other options than listening what high command says. Yadiyurappa followed High command instruction and fought election and the result all we know. The strategy was implemented right from issuing the tickets. Many BJP MP s did not get the ticket example Shobha. This is how it should be so that other's will get a chance to contest. That is why Amith Sha is called as Chanakya of BJP. Congratulations to our newly elected CM.

BJP should not be part of the dirt these swine's are indulging now. We have got the peoples mandate . We have Janabala, They have Sankyabala. That is much more than power by hook or crook. The supreme court should be pleaded to appoint a committee to monitor movement of iron ore, to maintain transparency and accountability in iron ore deals from Bellary and elsewhere in the state.

Congress needs to adapt to the new Indian political environment. The governor has acted in a blatantly partisan manner by not allowing the Congress-JDS alliance to form the government. Vala, has not acted as a neutral arbiter.

Within 15 days BSY will be resigning from CM post because of insufficient numbers. So 'End' of BSY in BJP in Karnataka. The central leadership wants BSY 's departure from active politics.

As I predicted BJP has outsmart JD(S)-Congress with the help of Governor to claim government.
The BJP, when it staked claim on Tuesday, asked for a week to get its MLAs together before a floor test. It is likely that, if the governor goes down this route, he will also give the BJP that much time, during which it can attempt to persuade 15 MLAs from other parties to abstain or resign (BJP’s tally of 104 will allow it to prove majority only in a house of 207, and the effective strength of the house right now is 222).
So 15 MLA's are missing in now in BJP's kitty?

If BJP can manage 'democracy' buying MLA's, why do we need expensive democracy?

There is no need for conducting elections if the elected candidates are freely allowed to sell themselves and switch party after the election . Total waste of money, time and energy . The governor himself can decide who can become MLA and which MLA can represent which political party.

I was just wondering if Congress had 104 and BJP 77 ( which I was expecting), then what the Governor would have done ?
I am sure in that scenario he would have allowed BJP +JDS to form the Government.
    Like in Goa.
Basically all the political parties are same. They want power at any cost
They don't have any specific ideology or program for the development of the country.
