Mangaluru: Non-extension of airport runway to hinder growth of region

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 3: It is a known fact that airports across the world want to have sufficiently long runways to enable even big aircrafts to safely land there. Likewise, there was proposal to extend the runway of the local airport from the current 8,038 ft to 10,000 ft to help even big-bodied airplanes to touch down here. It was earlier said that land acquisition process, which was to be undertaken by state government, was pending.

In a shocking revelation, it has now become public that instead of extending the runway, the runway here is being cut down to 7,644 sqft from the current 8,038 ft. This is being done to provide for Runway End Safety Area (RESA). It is said that disinterestedness shown by higher officials at the airport their inability to rightfully assert the need to extend the runway of the airport to stay in competition with airports of the neighbouring state, has given rise to the current situation.

It is learnt that Directorate General of Civil Aviation has issued instruction to the airport here to cut down the 2,450 metre runway to 2,330 metres (7,644 ft). In the remaining 120 metres, RESA, which has already been demarcated, will be created. RESA is safety area at the end of the runway to stop damage to aircraft in case of undershoot, overshoot, or excursion. This area is filled with sand so that the aircrafts safely come to a stop if they go out of the runway by chance.

On the other hand, there is information that Kannur international airport in neighbouring Kerala is being prepared for inaugural shortly with 10,000 ft runway. Once this airport is ready for big aircrafts, it may attract more international flights and passengers from Kasargod area might prefer that airport to the airport here, it is feared.

Therefore, the officials here were expected to convince DGCA about the need to extend the runway here to compete with others rather cutting down on it. M R Vasudeva, who served as airport director here for long in the past, believes that this will be a disadvantage for the airport here. He feels that lack of will power on the part of officials and people's representatives from here has given rise to a situation in which there is apprehension about this airport losing its importance.

He points out that instead of cutting down the runway, the airport area could have been extended by 60 metres by filling mud in the area already available around the airport and RESA could have been created there by shifting the localizer currently standing there without compromising on safety aspects. He also points out that the taxiway being built at a cost of crores of rupees will lose its relevance if the runway gets pruned and the number of aircrafts being operated from here comes down.

Director of the airport, V V Rao, said that RESA is being created as safety measure in tune with DGCA rules. He says that safety aspect is of more importance than extension of runway and the state government was also convinced of the need to create this area.

In short, the failure to extend the airport runway will hinder the growth of economy of the region.

Use Kannur airport. It has very good scope for the future. Depending on seat allocations, Emirates will start its operations there. Its time to forget about Mangalore Airport. God knows why they gave international status to this airport.

The tiny state of Kerala is ready to offer its fourth International standard airport. If that comes to operational, the passengers from the northern Kerala who are forced to take Mangalore no longer opt due to harassment they have faced.
I have travel across the globe but it is first Airport in the world were homebound passenger was pat checked by "friendly" customs. In my best experience this the only unique airport where custom officer saying 'custom duty' for used clothes.
In comparison Karnataka has only two International standard Airport which is not upto the standard comparing to the fee and taxes charged from the passengers.
In one of the country's worst aviation disaster, an Air India Express flight from Dubai to Mangalore crashed while landing at the Mangalore airport at 6:05 am on Saturday. A Boeing 737-800, the aircraft, with 166 people on board, overshot the runway and crashed into the valley is still fresh in memories.
The dead souls are still yet reach peace nor their dear ones got any compensation as per International Civil Aviation Organisation rules.
This airport should be given to defence and new airport should be planned considering potential of North Canara, Udupi, Mangalore, Hubli and Goa passengers as center.
How long India will take to learn from the disasters?
    Jai Hind

I totally agree with you. We should be like the Keralites in taken initiatives to develop our state airports to World Class. With maximum revenues from Gulf Nri's coastal belt of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts and other areas must pool in to improvise the Infrastructure of these airports. Politicians cannot do anything but eat tax payers incomes. Think about it. Don't vote unnecessary without thinking. As One state, many worlds.

Kerala lobby may have been already planted in the Mangalore airport in decision making level. We have to learn from ex-minister of state Mr. E. Ahmed, who diverted the Bangalore-Mangalore train to Kannur within 6 months of commissioning of the new broad gauge line. All our MPs, MLAs was sleeping. Now also they are sleeping.

Take off there is no problem with shorter run way. Whereas for landing they have to reduce the speed considerably. There are many Airports in the world where big planes are Landing in smaller Airports like M'lore. Since it is Table Top Airport that is the advantage for small Airports.

Bajpe airport is table top, not at all safe to extend. It is more appropriate to look for another place in our twin district for a new airport.

But building a new airport is a good idea too...

The existing airport land can be disposed to real estate and can earn billions of rupees...

No use extending runway if the customs fellows keep troubling passengers for wearing simple gold ornaments. First regulate these customs people and then think of runway expansion. Otherwise, the passengers from neighboring places will still prefer to land further away from Mangalore.

No problem!!!! Instead of wide bodied 747's Mangaloreans can operate Dakota planes, that can be landed compartably 100 meter runway or second option is Bullock cart!!!! People like present MP, not interested in airplanes only in COWs. If there are lots of Cows, then naturally cows will give birth to lots of male calf's, that can be used for Bullock cart!!!! No runway needed at all only a Cow shed!!!!!

First of all ask your nidde government to acquire land. Then you can see the solution...
After seeing satellite imagery from google earth I concluded that, expansion can be done in the following way...
There is much unused land on the old run-way side. Old run way anyway no use ?
Suppose you break 50% of the old run way and move that land to the end of the new runway... Job done!

Smart City and no proper Airport? what our hard working MLA Lobo and Mp Nalin Kumar are doing? what the karnataka government led by siddu is doing cannot acquire 90 acres land? who said there is no place to extend or realign the airport runway.? what the Airport Authority engineers are upto? even a school child can tell by looking at google map the mangalore Airport runway can be realigned and extended upto 600 meters to 3200 meters. just by shifting runway approach by few meters and and at the end shifting it near to the terminal.

Anyway the Airport Authority is filling the gorge to create a taxiway and work already started . Instead of taxiway , realign the runway and keep 300 meters space on both sides of the runway and RESA is also sufficient. The Airport will be as good as any other international Airport in the world or even better. what is required is just an out of the box thinking.

All this is done to market kannur Airport and please the kerala diaspora. let the congress led karnataka govt wake up and do something before the lose the next election. Let karnataka NRI forum and all associations give a strong referendum to the PM, president and authorities concerned.

The future of Mlore looks gloomy. No MNC would be interested to set up their shops in Mangalore. In 2007 Mlore was in the top5 preferred IT destiny in the country. Now it is not even there in top 50.
Our youth has to migrate to far away cities to make a career. We the civil society have lets this happen by making it easy for our political representatives to win elections on petty issues primarily based on communal polarization. We never questioned our MP on real issues. He stands nowhere compared to the vision of our honourable PM to take this country forward. Now it is for the BJP supporters to question our MP for the sake of our city and if he is incapable of delivering he should be replaced. There are many other able leaders in BJP who can contest and win the election and represent Mlore well in the parliament and take our beloved city to its rightful place. I will vote for BJP if the BJP MP seat is given to an able leader who can do justice to mlore. Unless the core supporters put pressure on him nothing is going to change.

This Bajpe airport is white elephant, and no use. There is no remotest possibility of development around this area or airport.
I have said this airport should be discarded as it is not meeting to the International Standards of safe airport operations.
Better move the airport to somewhere after Mulki Hejamadi as previously planned.
If it is was already done so, nearly half the funds spent on extension/revision of runway prior to Air India crash would have been saved, and even the crash would not have occured.
